21 , just the short 4th , not the ultra short 4th 20 type . the clutch question , if a long arm cover the wave springs not too hard on the hand for me . but the crimaz clutch conversion if set right an used with the bearing pressure plate makes it really light . i'd rate them too 16bhp if in good order ,will hold more but wont last as long as say a fabbri24 or egig one finger .a cheaper option than the crimaz easy clutch or egig 1 fingers the vmc hard work clutch , after all the egigs just a reworked vmc .
but in primarys the polinis about 160 , drt 120 , but a stock basket newfrens 60ish , with the clutches mentioned above they fit in stock baskets ,no need for tall baskets .an the faff about spacing cover an backplate/hub/etc to prevent rub ,an with gentle clutch use a newfren cush drive will last .its all well n good getting fancy primarys with stronger springs in cush .but harsh clutch dumps at the red light bandit territory just move the shock loads on further down the gear train.
going back to clutches , if you fancy a egig one finger theres 2 options , fit it as it comes . an suffer drag til it beds in , or 2nd option remove a cork n steel so its a 4 plate rather than 5 , an they work out the box .
i didnt follow this advice ,as i knew better , fitted it an adjusted n faddled around ,had a lovely clutch , for 20-30 miles , then drag drag drag incurable drag .
the crimaz long arm clutch cover conversion doohickey , i like/love them , so simple , but needs careful setting , arm should be just before 90 degrees to centre line when ya feel the plunger hit the plate . get that an there magic , not get that an like some i know you'll declare there shit .other options , a xl2 cover ,best of luck finding one . a sip cover ,if you find one made right ,go buy a lottery ticket quick coz ya on a lucky streak . the king of em ,the crimaz cover ,bout £150 out the box but just fits n works . tho there is now the polini one ,bout £90 , not had one ,but a guy i trust has built using a few an says there good/ok . an he knows ive my own trade accounts so aint making no coin off me ,so aint just pushing his own products/stock unlike some . theres others like frt/bfa etc but too my eye there just crimaz clones/rebranded crimaz .
an if ya wonder why all this talk of clutches an covers , well a vespa lives or dies by its cables , wether you enjoy the ride or not i mean . an wether it hurts ya wrist or not is cables/clutch/cover . its all well an good having a clutch that will hold 40+bhp ,but if 5 minutes in traffic means a "pain break" an a wrist splint/bandage . how often you going to ride it an enjoy the experience eh .H
