Hi just purchased my first scooter at the age of 53, got something off ebay that the vin says is a pk100xl and the engine's a pk50. Having spent far more than its value getting everything tidied up, now decided that its cheaper, plus I get a kick out of sorting something out for myself. When changing up it slides smoothly up to 4th gear, coming down from 4 to 3 there a nice "clunk" that I can feel through the scooter, however going from 3 to 2 is pants, can't find second at all. Been suggested to tighten the gear cables and make sure the inner cables are lubricate. Been looking it up on the internet, can I ask where do I start, is it through the headset or in the selector box. Thanks for looking. Rob in Notts

the gear cables are quite straightforward to tighten up, but a bit awkward. Try and screw the adjusters out a little. To lubricate the cables you'll have to undo the cables at the engine end, take off the headset and pull the cables ends off the cog and try and get some oil down the cables. I'd be tempted to renew both cables or at least the inners so you can lubricate them properly.

Hi, removed the gear selector cover and found that the two cables go on to a circular (like a pulley) piece of metal with a groove for the cables. Metal attached to the cables then holds in notches on this pulley ( batwing?). Not really matching any of the two examples in this topic, but a bit of both. To adjust do I put it in neutral and then move the bits of metal attached to the cable, and then reseat them back in the pulley?

mmmmmm... yes youre about right, put it into neutral, line up the dots on the headset/cover, undo the cables a little and pull the cables tight. its awkward, it can help if someone holds the headset set in the right position (i dont bother). the cables dont have to be super tight, but they need to be equally tight. all you might have to do though is just screw the cables adjuster out more.

Hi, been watching the football so only just read your reply. Are the cable adjusters outside of the gear selector cover? Easy to spot the brake and clutch adjusters but there's quite a bit of muck underneath in the cover area. Are they smaller than the other adjusters and they screw out to tighten. Will have another go tomorrow

Got 'em now inside the cover. One of the cables though is much looser than the other, and one adjuster is far easier to get to. I guess you know that I'm going to say the one next to the flywheel is the slack one and I'm struggling to get an 8mm spanner on the adjuster never mind turn it. At least I think I know what needs doing now, thanks for the advice

How do the cable adjusters work? It looks as if I'm moving the outer cable and not the inner

Well, you are really. You are making the outer cable longer, which makes the inner cable tighter.

Thanks for the replies, took me a couple of hours a fiddlin around but eventually managed to get the adjusters far enough out to make a difference. Been riding up and down the street just changing from 2 to 3 to 2 to 3 to 2, happy as a pig in muck. Thanks again, Rob. ;D
