Reading the forum its common knowledge 16 deg b4 tdc. is the setting for my polini130 on an et3 motor. I have strobed the engine to the measurements from tdc and all seems to line up. so just to double check am i right to say that the stator being turned clockwise to it stops is near the proper position?

probably! Turning stator clockwise retards the ignition. All motors seem to be a little different so using strobe is a good idea.

16deg is play safe, but on a less highly tuned engine or if you have a squish gap of less than 1.2mm you can easily go up to 19deg. Just listen for picking. more advance will give you better low end torque / power.
