nope, 2nd new plug has no effect.
I've also switched the stator plate from my pk80 engine to see if that has any effect, but no difference. all i can think is carb removal again, i've got a 24mm dellorto that i could put on to try - any more suggestions? not sure about how good the loom is but should still start shouldnt it?

Not if it's broken and shorting inside.

well the loom doesnt look great from the bits i can see and as i bought it non running, dont know when it last ran so thats maybe the next thing to eliminate - great Can you get a new loom in without taking all the (new) cables out......?

Not if it's broken and shorting inside. any easy way to either check it with a multimeter, isolate part(s) of it, etc. to see whether thats the problem before i take the plunge. I must admit that the thought of trying to thread the indicator and back brakes wires thro the holes in the frame is not a happy thought.........and of course ripping out the new cables to put them back in again!

to much petrol? float gone bad?
you could try to isolate the stator from the loom. just hook up the coil and earth from the stator.

Remove the connector of the outer green cable on the ignition black box. That would eliminate the ignition switch fault. In lieu I doubt this is the problem as you would then have no spark at all. Have you checked the fuel flow to the carb (e.g. tap blocked, fuel hose too long - got an air bubble in the line), checked the ignition timing? Pickup defect on both stators? Would it start using StartPilot? Mounted the Piston the wrong way round? What does the spark plug look like (wet or dry) - I recently fitted a brand new FRBBC (fucking repro black box crap) which did not work despite some spark it produced.

tried removing the green wire already. the stators been rewired/tested and i've already switched a different stator over just to check, tried it with two coils, one brand new, the other old but both produced a decent spark. the plugs a little wet. piston is the right way round. got a brand new fuel tap and pipe which opened and closed when it was out of the scooter.
I'll try and put some petrol directly down the plug hole? see if that works, otherwise i'll strip the carb down again, before i think about rewiring. only got spare 16, 19 & 24 mm carbs, but only a 3 hole manifold for the 20mm one thats on, so i'll have to get a another manifold to try one of those.
thanks for the suggestions, i'll report back.
whats startpilot?

still not starting even when i put some petrol directly into the plug hole - one thing i noticed when i took the flywheel off and switched stators was that a litle bit of oily petrol (?) had dripped out, presumably from the flywheel seal, its a brand new seal, looks to be seated right and no more has come out.

Startpilot is a brand name for a spray can with methylalcohol?, a starting aid you spray into the carb/filter.

It Works.... ;D ;D ;D ;D must have been carb/fuel pipe related as i've stripped and cleaned the carb, there was also a few air bubbles in the fuel pipe as well, put it all back on and hey presto, a working engine! of course, its not without problems as the ignition key does fuck all so i have to stall it to turn it off, the headlight & rear lights work, the horn vibrates a bit and the indicators don't work, well the back ons light up thats all. i should have put that new loom i was thinking about in.........

It's all a learning curve, you won't be such a twat again. ;D thanks for the praise, not. ;D sorted ignition out, dont have to stall it anymore, back indicators flash now, got a working horn in (great sound as always), only problems are the front indcators and the rear brake light which do nothing.
