Hi, I have a little pk 50 s vespa in Milton Keynes. She's normally lovely and obedient but earlier this week she had a problem. She died half way to work. Just stopped dead and won't fire. There is an intermitent spark at the plug not as strong as it used to be i think.. She had been out in the rain for a couple days so maybe something got damp... so tried a new plug, leaving her in the sun, better spark but still nothing.. It's been 4 days since she stopped.. syphened off some petrol round the carb to see if there was water in the petrol.. didn't work, put petrol directly into the plug hole.... still no joy There is dirt in the bottom of the petrol tank so will try cleaning the carb incase there is a blockage and pray that works! You can see her photo here - www.flickr.com/photos/saralouise81/352806421/

Could be a number of things really but it sounds electrical to me.Get a multimeter and try and trace the power stream back starting from the plug through to the stator plate and onto the loom.I'd guess at a bad earth somewhere if you've had no indication of anything else about to give up the ghost.
The best way if it's open to you is to swop out parts from a friends bike that's running,if you don't have that luxury it's a bit of a pain.
It could also be that it's mechanical, worn out rings etc but I'd check the electrics first.

I concur with Juan but what's the other symptoms though... how's your compression (sounds like the same problem I had)
Did the scoot just cut out all of a sudden when you were riding it (If you're not sure on compression, is your kickstart really easy to push down - like there's no resistance - even though your flywheel spins and the engine turns over?)
If so a strip down and rebuild might be in order... (just a thought)

hi mate i'd agree with juan-check electrics first. Get a multimeter-set it to ohms(resistance).. working with the wires that go to the cdi..read green wire(source coil) from stator to earth( normally white wire that goes to the to the cdi) you should get around 500ohms. Then read the red wire(pickup) to earth and it should read around 110ohms. Other than that you havent by any chance sheared the flywheel woodruff key have you?

Hi, if you at the end cannot fix it I recommend get her to Northampton and let Martyn from Universal Scooters fix her. Universal Scooters Contact

Woodruff key is still there..have cleaned the points with emery paper and checked the bulbs as only the indicators are working they are fine...
Still nothing...
Might have to take her to northampton but have no trailer so might be a while..
Any other ideas of what i could check?

I'd still say check your compression, especially if it's been running fine then all of a sudden died whilst you were riding along... Can you move the flywheel by hand?? (Mind your fingers) If it spins freely with your fingers then your compression's sh*te.. If you feel some resistance, it's OK

Maybe someone on here will know for sure. But obviously check they are opening-points gap i believe should be 0.4mm. Otherwise change em and the condenser together. Was it raining by any chance when it stopped-the old 50 special's used to suffer from water in the ign coil that was mounted on the rear of the motor.

Doh! ;D Yes they don't have points... but i cleaned them anyway (ps we're Irish!) And yes it was left out in VERY heavy rain, drove for about a mile and then quit in the middle of a roundabout.. Went to Sandy Scooters in Bedfordshire who are really brilliant and i would thoughly reccomend. Narrowed it down to the CDI or the pick up or the low tension coil.. Series of prescribed tests using a multimeter showed that the low tension coil is buggered and needs replaced. I am armed with my soldering iron and new low tension coil but cannot get the old one off! argh so close but so far! So anyone.. How do i get the old low tension coil off the stator plate and replace it with a new one? Once it starts i promise to leave you all in peace

Prized off
But part of it will never go back on although the new LT coil should stay on none the less...
It now starts but having a problem with a decaying green wire which runs from the stator to the ignition switch..so it turns on but doen't turn off.. at least i know the answer to this problem!
Thank you!!
