A bit tight if anything, I usually ask for 0.4mm. Take it easy with the running in using cheap shit mineral oil.

Hold on now... .3mm clearance is massive... On 57mm bore around 3 thou clearance would be ok depending on piston quality/barrel material and how well its set up. I run closer on some stuff. 3thou is around 0.076mm.

OK looks like it's calipers at dawn gents But basically i have no choice but to run it now so i will see how i go..... but i will double check measurements tomorrow, and check clearance on the std cylinder as well.... Hope they haven't gone a bit mad on the re-bore as teh GS piston cost a packet! And Juan why do you use shit oils, i have seen this written a few times now?!?

this is what Olli@Grand-Sport told me when i bought my piston:
"After receiving the pistons, rebore and hone the cylinder to a piston clearance of 7- 8/ 100mm, measured with the coating. This will work fine and without problems."

Sorry, brain wasn't working earlier as I was just in and was cold, tired and hungry.
I ment 4 thou which if my crap maths aren't too far out equates to around 0.11 mm. The crap oil is abrasive and will break in the barrel and rings quicker which obviously is more important with tight tolorances.

Spoken with Beedspeed and they are going to sort out the problem..... Will need a rebore to 58mm and a new GS piston, or a new cylinder so i don't run out of rebore space....
Shame about not getting the engine back together before christmas but at least they have made a committment look after it all.

still waiting for my "new" cylinder to come back from Beedspeed but my engine is almost ready to come back together, so it is time for my last bit of kit...... a new exhaust!
The bike is a daily drive but its maximum journey length is about 30 minutes across london and i do enjoy ragging it.... a lot!!
Spec is Worb 5 style polini with about 1.5mm taken off the top, with 25mm reed, worb lip crank and GS piston with big transfers and widened exhaust port.
So, what should i be looking at to replace the PM40? Franz (sems popular in europe) VSP Race (apparently quieter than the franz with similar power which is good!!) Scooter and Service (nice but pricey) Hammerzombie (too noisy from what people say)
Any thoughts from people who have ridden or heard them?

Max and vg run vsp race pipes. Not too noisy and good spread of power. They are designed for around 9000k.

Yep, the VSP Race is a good pipe. I find it a bit noisy around town though and I love it! ;D
The GF Project Race seem to work well with mad tuned polini top ends too.

certainly quieter than my pipe on my road bike mate

Just spoke to Stoffi this afternoon and he was suggesting his new Road, Down and Forward pipe. It is closer to the Race than the VSP PM copy, and only down 1 HP on the race pipe with more tourque.... AND a lot quieter....
He had it designed by Jim Lomas and it uses one of the JL mufflers which Stoffi said was a lot quiter than the italian mufflers........ might be tempting. I'll try and post the comparison dyno charts when he sends them through.
... though 9000 revs does sound a bit of a laugh around town

if your worried about noise then get some earplugs the chemist will have some

Hey Johnny, good suggestion and i've already been using Blu Tack as ear plugs for the last 4 years to keep long term tinnitus in check. I find it keeps out more noise and is more comfortable than the wax, silicon or foam plugs from the chemist.
So i guess that i am after a loud rather than REALLY LOUD pipe that revs more and gives more power than my PM40....
i'm not hard to please, am i ;D

I am ordering a GF project pipe for my 1971 primavera 130 dr kit. In Canada here there are no other people or a very few vespa's here. How loud is it and I am just going to use it around town the cops here have no idea what pipe is not legal for road use cause they never seen a 125 primavera. Should I order this pipe or you have any suggestions..thank you Tracey

Lunaticfrenzy, Mine is not that loud mate, I'm sure you won't have a problem with the law, in fact when I first started it upI thought thats quiet for an expansion pipe mine isnt the race version but the cans look the same anyway

OK, I'm back in business with the polini....sort of! a quick reminder of what i am trying to achieve. I have a now polini cylinder (with bigger standard transfers than the one i bought of SIP 12 months ago!?!) that has been topped (2mm) and tailed (4.5mm) to create a worb 5 style / GS piston tune. It should be fun All this has opened up the boost port at the bottom of the cylinder. Whilst this is no problem if you are using the original piston and 5mm base gasket, i am only using the 1mm gasket to get the correct timings due to the shorted GS Piston. This is a problem as the open bost port now overhangs the cases and i am guessing that there is no way a 1mm alloy gasket is going to seal with nothing underneath it. So...... how have other people resolved this? Do i: 1. weld the bottom of the boost port so it closes up the gap just past the overlap of the cases/base gasket? +ves, dont need to split and weld my cases and have them machined flat -ves, will have to close the boost port slightly, but i should be able to dremel in a nice curve so it flows better anyway. 2. Extend the cases so that the gasket is supported past the boost port +ves, can open up the boost port into the cases and cylinder skirt to improve the flow and volume -ves, have to re split my cases which i really really don't want to do!! So, what have others with the GS piston done to resolve this?!?
