Hi all!
Have just joined the forum! I have been following a few of the threads with much interest now for a while, so I thought I'd join up and say 'lo'
Anyway, don't have a scoot yet, but am thinking of a 125 Prima for a project over a 12 month period...(don't have any kids, so it might even go faster! ;D) Love the smallframes!
I'll stick a wanted add in soon, but thought I'd ask a few questions since the only over things I've ever restored with me dad was: 1989 Volkswagen 2.0l 16V Jetta from police stolen recovery (complete engine rebuild), a Renault 5 and a Fiat Nuova 500 with soft-top. I'm originally from South Africa...little vintage Vespa's there except for the odd import...
Anyway, if I were to buy a EU imported 125 Prima (not from eBay, I stay faaar away for anything over £100) from a shop with dating cert and it hasn't been reg'ed yet in the UK, how easy is it to reg it here and is there anything I HAVE to get with the scoot paper wise? Is it fair to ask for marking numbers before you buy?
Anyway, will be restoring in a shed so will be fook'n cold! Still need to wire the shed up.
Thanks all! Look forward to meeting some peeps here. Anybody in the Bristol area?
Cheers!
Jacques.

Hi and welcome. Bristol eh? Gazzman is from Bristol whilst myself, Swallow and John ET3 are from Bath. ;D Not 100% sure of what you need paper wise but I'm sure you need import papers. I'm sure someone else is more clued up than me. I have spent the winter in my shed working on a primmy and at time it was definitely bloody freezing. Got an electric heater at the end and it was rosting. ;D Max

Hey Jacques, I'm fairly new here too but have quickly found this place to be a wealth of information, inspiration and help with my project. Welcome aboard! As for your shed... a cheapy elec heater and a decent sound system will keep you in there no problem mate Cheers, Steve H.

you need a dating certificate (which YOU can get from a few places)
What I'd not leave the seller's place without is some kind of receipt to show you have legally purchased it.

Cheers all!
Yep, I can certainly obtain a dating certificate and receipt. Anything else? Do I need import papers?
Gonna check out the shed now and measure it up and check elect supply...

If you can get import papers all the better - if not - well I didn't need em.
The risk is you may be charged duty on the "value" of the bike when you purchased it. I wasn't - but I only paid £250 ;D so it wasn't a big risk
the receipt will prove the value of the bike when you purchased it rather than someone in customs saying "they're worth a bloody fortune these Vespas aren't they, why the other day I saw one (an SS90) go for 8 grand..."

I think ETS has imported some before. He'll probably know.
I think the import papers are needed to certify the provenance?
Anyway, watch this space. ;D

I imported my 50 special in 2003 and contacted local scooter specialists "Revival" to ask how it was done. They kindly took it off my hands as they were going up to the Bristol VLO that week. I remember that in addition to all the documentation etc. I gave them, (which was in German), they had to organise a dating certificate in order to give an age-related registration. The only problem was when they brought my 1982 scooter back, it had a W on the *front* end of the reg!!! So it went back and came back with an old Bath-specific registration number, whether by accident or design I don't know. But I don't think it needed more than proof of ownership and a log book to register it, with the date cert to get a correct reg. There was a fee, but no import duty as such that I remember.

...whereby I should probably clarify that I had already owned the v50s for about 3 years when I moved back from Germany.
