I do love a good engine build!
Wanna see a blow by blow account, by the look of that lot, it was a pretty penny!

as the spanish 125 engines stalled waiting on parts thought i'd keep busy with this one. IMG_3327 by henri briggs, on Flickr . so out with cases to check , build the primary/basket ,an dry build the gears to check for shimming . IMG_3328 by henri briggs, on Flickr . then get clutch corks into oil to soak. an out with dummy bearings to check for clearance on the 115mm conrod against the cases ,all good . next will start getting bearings an seals into cases then build the bottom end up .H

so in with new bearings ,quality japanese koyo brand used ,an the usual lots of heat needed with cases being new .when cooled a brown viton clutch seal in , installed with bearing locker to lubricate it on way in an then seal it . IMG_3329 by henri briggs, on Flickr . then on with the rest of the engine internals on clutch side ,an breather an oil drain screws . IMG_3330 by henri briggs, on Flickr . then too the flywheel side , tree in with bearing locker , then bearing onto crank ,an crank into cases ,brown viton fly seal fitted . IMG_3331 by henri briggs, on Flickr . an that was enough for a sunday morning , nxt will be cases together an fit the clutch .H

an cases together . IMG_3332 by henri briggs, on Flickr . with just a few minor problems ,had to shim the selector fork top bolt up, or it was binding on the fork when tightened .an the usual new case bolt game,2 of them stripping when being torqued . IMG_3333 by henri briggs, on Flickr . in with the egig 1 finger clutch ,using 6 out of the 8 springs . IMG_3334 by henri briggs, on Flickr . an on with the polini xl2 style clutch cover . IMG_3335 by henri briggs, on Flickr . todays job is to prep the barrel , smooth/chamfer port edges an generally clean it all up .H

for those wondering about the egig ,heres a picture . IMG_3338 by henri briggs, on Flickr . as you can see with a very short skirted piston ,only possible with the much longer conrod, 115mm . the majority of transfers are in the barrel above the base gasket level . so theres no need to alter cases to match the barrel ,on his 180cc kit that needs a spacer .egig has done back to back testing with a spacer an with a blanking plate that covers case transfers . the difference in power output was minimal , under 1/2bhp ,but more effect on torque values .H

so after the usual preps , check piston/bore clearance ,set ring gaps an chamfer port edges ,its dry fit barrel with thinnest supplied gasket to check squish .was 1.28mm ,an kits recommended to be 1.3 to 1.4mm , so nxt size gasket chosen . IMG_3339 by henri briggs, on Flickr . whilst heads off out with dti an find tdc ,an fit ignition so accurate timing marks can be made .1st problem , sip cases an a sip vape ignition ,big surprise they dont fit . transfer bulge holds stator up . IMG_3341 by henri briggs, on Flickr . so out with grinder an belt sander an alter stator base plate to fit ,then fit flywheel an make timing marks for 18btdc . IMG_3342 by henri briggs, on Flickr IMG_3343 by henri briggs, on Flickr . nxt onto the inlet .H

1st thing with inlet ,an the reeds dont fit in the block . IMG_3345 by henri briggs, on Flickr . so a careful trim with belt sander to get them in . IMG_3346 by henri briggs, on Flickr . an there it is ,basically finished . IMG_3347 by henri briggs, on Flickr . now just wait til the nxt dry day an run up in the stand an set timing .H

I thought the egig 170 was just plug and play: everything just fitted together. Seems not.

yep advertised as plug an play ,an also no frame mods needed . IMG_3381 by henri briggs, on Flickr . thats a trial fit of another egig i'm building into a v range frame ,pretty much zero clearance between inlet an frame . going to have to deepen the frame hole or soon as suspension compresses it will hit .H
