What are your thoughts and experiences on aftermarket carb air filters or air intake trumpets?
Which is best/preferred?

The carb should already have a bellmouth, the phbl/phbh do not, not great forcflow, by putting a trumpet on there won't play a tune but it will ruched the mixture, ram air foam filters are good, but it will depend on where the carb is situated, in the frame there isn't much room for a big foam filter so don't bother in there

If you live in a dry dusty area -- like I do -- you need a filter, period. Open trumpet just means your $$$ engine will wear out quickly.
If you live in a humid climate, there is very little suspended matter in the air and you can run an open trumpet. Bear in mind that if anyone has a grudge against you it is also then super simple to sabotage your engine -- yes, it happens.

I have to replace my piston every 500 miles or every 2 races anyway. If not a toy like mine and you have room then a foam filter would be preferable but I'd still put a very short bellmouth onto the back of the carb and fit the filter onto that
