Oil leak.

Hi all, just a quick question I topped up my gearbox oil a week ok and when I went back to garage a few days later there was a big oil leak on the garage floor. Now I am thinking I might not of let oil level off and seep out of filler plug before putting it back in. So over filling it has caused pressure and for it to leak out of gear selector as it was coming from there. And if so would this cause a problem or oil leak now in the future or is it possible to do this. I had not started or ride scoot after top up either so it's naturally leaked out. As it's never happened before until I topped it up. What do you guys think is this normal for overfilled oil to find away out . Thanks

I guess it all depends on what you mean by "overfill". A wee bit extra? No, it wouldn't leak out like that. Drain the oil, fit new sealing washers to the two plugs, refill and see what happens.

Probably got a knackered seal on gear selector. common problem, bugger to fix.

FFS unbelievable I was tightening up the oil screw underneath and the thread inside has rung and the bolt won't tighten now. It must if been like this before as I hardly got it tight and it rung😦😦 Probably why it was leaking as by wasn't properly tightened down. Is there anyway to fix this can I cut a re cut the thread inside engine or is it a new engine 😮😮

You can either use a tap to cut a larger thread or fit a thread repair insert. Myself, I would fit an insert. You can buy kits with the special tap, inserts and installation tool. Coat the tap with grease to catchiest of the swarf. Flush with solvent or mineral spirits. Then flush with oil and you're done.

IIRC, it's a 8mm x 1.25 thread but hopefully someone will confirm that.

Ok thanks guys that's a relief and I think your right it is an M8 so if I recut with a tap would it have to be next size up which is M10.?? Just I think that would be more secure then a helicoil as they do have the tendency to fail sometimes.

I have fit many heli-coils with no problems. It makes for a very strong repair in an alloy case.

Hi mate, Thanks for your help and I went for heli coil like you said and it's all sorted job done 😊😊 Made a good repair was abit worried going up to a M10 by re cutting thread but worked well in the end. Cheers 👍

Thanks very much. I might give it a try. I also found this stuff whilst looking for a fix..... Loctite 'form a thread' seems it sold mostly in the States. Found this review on amazon for it 5.0 out of 5 stars Oil drain repaired Reviewed in the United States on 26 August 2017 Used it in the bottom of a 1973 Vespa scooter.The drain plug for the oil damaged threads in the aluminum casing. So far it's torqued and not leaking.
