It's not a Sportique, if 125, 1970 or 3 speed. Clutch I'm not sure about but I'd whip it out to check the state of the plates first.

Sportiques are Douglas built and early 60's, British equivelent of the VBB. Largeframe with small wheels.

Forgive my silly question... is there enough/any oil in the gear casing and is it the correct type? Best for your clutch is a mineral 15W40.

Yes rock oil SAE 30 is best don't use any of the others as they can destroy the cork plates. If its slipping when warm its nothing to do with the oil the plates are knackered, whip out the clutch and check.

like Juan said, if it has a 'original' 125cc 3 speed engine, then its not he 'original' sportique engine, the sportique was made by Douglas and its designation was 312L2 and was a 150cc 4 speed with 8 inch wheels an can not be what you got cos they never made them in 1970 as i don't think Douglas was still in business then! the VBB was made by piaggio which a lot of people mistake by calling a 'sportique' the first vbb was a VBB1T which was made between 1960 - 1962 then the VBB2T was made between 1962 - 1967. so it is possible to be a VBB but a late registered one. th only way to find out for sure is to find out what the chassis number is and the frame number is.
the oil should be sae30 but i would buy a better quality one than 'lawnmower' oil lol also if the plates are slipping, why not just put in some new ones, they don't cost much!

If its 1970, then it may be an Indian one. theres a few of them doing the circuits being passed off as italian machines. Like 007 says, get a decent oil, it will be worth it and not too much more expensive
