Sorted the speedo cable today, after greasing the inner didnt solve it I realised it wasn't fully seating in the worm gear. Gave the worm a good clean and with a bit of persistence got it in there.
Also seem to have solved the lights issue. All I did was tidy things up in the headset. I put heat shrink and a spade connector on the ignition cut out wire which I discovered was just connected by poking bare wire through the terminal and twisting it. I insulated all the connectors on the headlight and next time I kicked it over the lights and horn were back.
Will try do the cables on Thursday.

Today I managed to get the cables sorted. Put in new gear cable inners but the clutch and brake cable look ok for now. Which meant that I could finally, FINALLY, try to ride this thing. And I did, it was fucking brilliant!! Only went a few streets away but got up through the gears into 4th and back again a couple of times. It pulls really well. Only went up to 30mph but it got there really quick. I could hardly believe I'd managed it, afterwards I sat on the back step looking at her and drinking a well earned beer for ages! So anyway, say hello to Velocity Girl: I want to just say again, THANK YOU, to everyone on here who has given me advice and help, I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks lads. Leon

Well done...take it easy for the first 100miles or so and keep listening and feeling how he/she/it? rides. Cables will ease, carb settings may need tweaking, and things may rattle loose...but enjoy it all!!

Thanks everyone. Tweaked the cables today and had another test ride, it rode better than last time, rear brake was miles better and clutch didn't drag as it had a tiny bit the other day. Gear selection was a tiny bit hit and miss but that could just be me being rusty with my changing, I've not ridden since I sold my PX in 2001. Think cables are good enough for now. Just got an issue with the brake light now so I've posted in technical for a bit of advice. Leon

Passed MOT no problem! But....got an air leak i reckon. My route includes a 50mph dual carriageway so had to get up to 40, pulled in at lights after that on way and engine was screaming like a bastard. Ignition off made no odds so had to turn fuel off. Just did it again on way home. Gonna take it as easy as possible and if I make it I'll set to tightening everything up. Can't be a seal as they're all new. Fun and games...

congrats on the mot .engine still running with ign off could be a switch fault ,pull plug an see if ya get a spark with ignition turned off .screaming engine points to a air leak or jamming throttle .an air leak would overheat the engine by lean mixture ,that could cause a carbon deposit on piston to burn red hot an give the running without ignition.unlikely in yours as dont think its done enuff miles to build carbon enuff to "hot-spot" . more likely a over heated plug acting as a "glow-plug" ,when you pull plug it should be obvious if this has happened from looking at it . new plug required for starters ,an i'm afraid the tedious n fustrating job of hunting down a leak ,but first make sure the throttle/slides properly returning an shutting correctly .could even be the throttle stop screw has un-adjusted/moved coz of a weak spring on it .hope it is something simple like that ,an ya get home safe .H

Well that couldn't have gone much worse. RAC guy said it was throttle outer catching causing it to rev up. We checked plug that was chocolate brown. I pointed out all my lights had blown since the MOT an hour before. I pointed out that oil was leaking from top end, which I thought meant an air leak, he said it couldnt cause over revving cos thered be no compression. He Tightened clip holding carb to manifold and sent me on my way, said he can't recover me cos scooters not taxed. He just said don't over rev it.
Had to kill engine again half way home in Brighouse town centre cos it did it again and reseating the throttle outer made no difference. Approaching home I turned fuel tap off to pre empt it over revving when I took it out of gear. Really fucking screamed this time though and sounded like bad stuff was happening in the engine, and as I tried to get it on the stand n in neutral it shot away from me, just missed my car and landed on its side and engine died. Now got a scratched engine door, bent mudguard, throttle has rammed into headset against speedo, and fuck knows what's happened in the engine. What a cunt of a day.

Also, not sure why engine wouldn't stop when ignition was turned off? Only way to stop it was starve it of petrol.
