How careful do I need to be looking for an engine door for my V9A? I've got an old beetle and the replacement parts available from China are abysmal. Thin metal, poor plating, vinyl in place of rubber etc. What's available and is it well made? Used?

Used originals are like rocking horse poo and aftermarket ones do not fit very well but is probably all you will be able to get hold of.

Once you do have an original small frame door how do you stop it from being stolen since they are do rare?

Buy the cheap one so it doesn't hurt so bad when it gets stolen? Interesting point.
I tend to worry about the whole scoot turning up missing, especially as I put more money into it. Here'e my concern. I drive a vw beetle and the aftermarket parts available SEEM affordable until you actually hold them and realize how flimsy the materials are. Bumpers that are made for looking at but not actually acting as bumpers because the metal is so thin. Online they look great but the minute you pick one up you understand they're junk. That's what I'm concerned with. That the metal of these vespa doors will be too thin, the hinges poorly engineered, the latch made of plastic, not pot metal. I don't have a lot of experience with vespa but know the VW parts I've seen at a discount are never worth the money. If you can find them, parts made to the original specs are THE only way to go, regardless of cost.
Does anyone have an idea of what prices these things go for? The one on ebay is up to $31 and I'm expecting it to sell for $80+ Does that sound right? It looks perfect.

Quite possibly, you might just manage to pick one up cheaply if you're lucky but it's unlikely seeing as they're rare and quite sought after.
On the security front I'd personally always fit a lock over a latch but I appreciate that won't be ideal for everyone.

Regardless of whether its original or a reproduction?

Acts a visual deterent at least, if you try hard enough you can stil get em off even with a latch (lost keys!)

Yeah, that and the fact it gives a slightly better fixing and less chance of it bouncing off down the road. If it were an unmolested 50 year old timepiece then of course I'd do nothing at all to it at all other than hide it away and take it out for the occasional vintage car / tractor / lorry or motorcycle event.
I'm on record as saying they're cute, bit of a pain in the arse to live with if I'm honest. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Depends of your focal point really.

I've rode this a few times and felt a little challenged on a number of fronts. Overall its in good shape with no rust and minimal damage to the metal but the value has always been limited because they've always been so underpowered. I think these were built with teenagers in mind. I'm going to ride it through the summer, but seriously thinking about a Polini 130 build in the fall. I'm not sure what you get for top end but the videos I've seen look like they do 60 easy.

You need to remember that the average car from the early 60's, in Europe at least, would've struggled to reach 70 and it would've been countable in minutes rather than seconds so they weren't so scarily unpowered in their day. But seeing as you're familiar with VW I suppose you hardly need telling that anyway.

I'll be picking it up from the shop next month. I'll try looking for the door again soon.
