Hi People,
new member here, just got myself a bit of nostalgia and bought a 50 Special 1971 Italian Import. The guy who registered it did a fair bit of work on it, a polini 110 kit, 19/19 Delorto Carb, Polini exhaust, new seat cables etc. MOT and Tax although exempt! I'm going to strip it down and start again, with new seals, gaskets, bearings, cables etc, a full respray and general rebuild. I will try to post a couple of pics of her later. The engine and frame numbers match as a 1969 to 1971 50 Special, although i'm pretty sure its a 50R, as it only has three speed gears and 2.75 x 9 wheels. One question I do have for all the experts, can I do a strait swap on the wheels and put on some 300 x 10 rims with tyres without having to much difficulty? Thanks guy's, I'll post up details of progress and no doubt lots of stupid questions over the next few months. Mark

Could be a Special as the earlier ones did have 3 speeds and 9" rims.
To get 10" rims you'll need to swop the hubs too and possibly the back plates as I don't know if they're the same or not, I've never done it. Alternatively I think I've seen 9 - 10" conversion rims somewhere.

Thank,s for the responses guys, I did check out the frame and engine number and it does come up as a 50 Special, it was imported from italy around 4 years ago. I will see if I can get the convertors 9 to 10, as I'm having difficuly getting new tyres!

SIP have the 9" tyres in stock and show the conversion rims but are out of stock with those. Maybe our Italian members could help you out there?

Thanks Guy's, I have found them on SIP and vespatime.it, the price is OK on both but the delivery costs are quite hi. At least I know I can now get them so I will try to locate a UK supplier. It's for safety as well as cosmetic the 2-75 by 9 tyres availble are pretty rubbish at least id I get 300 by 10 I have a much wider choice and overall safer tyres.
