Your cush drive springs are shot or have popped out of the primary. Either way you're looking at an engine split and cush drive repair. Sorry... Yeah thought so. To be honest now I've spent some time riding it (and at these speeds the cush isn't under much strain really) I've realised there's a fair bit needing doing to get it truly roadworthy. Even if I do restore it it'll be embarrassingly slow off the mark and scarily bad at stopping when up to speed compared to my PK, and not really much use in London. Plan A was to put my PK engine and forks into this frame and sell what's left of the PK on eBay to get some funds. Plan B came about when I realised this might be my only chance to ride a standard Vespa 90 so decided to get it running. But I'm now faced with devoting time and money to the V90 engine that I don't have... so having had a nice few days cursing the V90, I'm ready to go back to plan A.

oh! also meant to say sort the wee bit of tinworm out sooner rather than later mate or you could be in for a fabrication job or worse new leggies It'll need a new floor eventually anyway - the sides are mangled and bent and the rust's quite bad. But it's not crumbling so I think it'll be okay for a couple of years until I have the time and money to strip and rebuild properly. It's actually quite nippy from 2nd gear upwards but 1st is too dangerous for London in my opinion... just can't get away from stuff (lights, oncoming buses) in time. As for my fingers it was only that short ride, I really don't make a habit of not wearing gloves but had left mine at work.

the replacement floor doesnt extend as far as that curve jimmy( i found this out the hard way) it only reaches the hole underneath where the rear brake switch goes into the frame beyond that point is classed as legshield if your looking for replacment tin mate., thats why im recommending a wee bit of welding now rather than a lot later

Would it be good enough just to ride up to a welder's and get them to fill in the hole? Or would I have to strip the scoot right down..?

Right - I got a bit vicious with the screwdriver as wanted to see how bad the tinworm was. The good news is it's only the floor that's rusty - the rest of the frame is solid. And apart from the holes I've poked, the floor is still pretty solid; I can stand on them and jump up and down (risky I know!) and they don't budge or bend. The bad news is, as already mentioned, I don't have the time/cash to strip, replace floor and respray. So for now it'll have to be a patch job, along with the bit that needs sorting on the legshield. Will a welder be able to weld around paint? Or would I have to strip it right back around the areas I need welding? Should I prepare the area by filing the rust away or anything?

What, and cut bits off that frame? Hmm, I could do... I already have a solid and straight V100 Sport frame to do something with, but it's so good overall that I wouldn't want to cut that up...

i dunno but yes that frame is good for nothing but carving up...
but your rot really doesnt look that bad - maybe just cut it bac with a wheel to see where you're at.
I cant see anything that looks too bad yet.

You can weld around the paint to some extent. You will need to clear about an inch around any areas that need welding. Otherwise the paint will bubble and lift. You'd be best off getting it TIG welded as you can get away with less current with TIG, less current = less heat. You could MIG it but be prepared to strip back another half an inch of paint.

I cant see anything that looks too bad yet. Thanks, good to hear yeah as I say apart from a few very distinct holes the rest seems solid and I can stand on it fine. If I can do as you say and wirewheel, kurust then filler it and paint over with a similar or matched colour, it'll live for another couple of years as it is. Then when I finally do restore it (after I get the small matter of my wedding out the way ) i'll probably cut out the floor, get the rest blasted and a new floor welded in.
