I seem to have one of these in my garage now - what have I done ;D Apologies upfront if this won't be of any interest but I'd thought I'd start posting up pics as I go as there is very little info out there on these Spanish Vespas. I found a little info on Scooterhelp and a couple of Spanish sites that sell a few of the parts. Seems the choices are either swap out the engine for something more commonly available or try and see whats compatible with the original - I'm going to try to do the latter for now. From what I can see so far its all solid and all the bits are there, needs a little welding to a floor strut thats all. Engine was seized but got the crank out. Given the cases a clean and looks pretty good. Dating certificate received confirming its a 1969 Motovespa 160. Cheers. Well scrub trying to get the original engine sorted - too many parts seemingly not available and no one with enough knowledge to say `do this instead`.
So the options are either get an old lardy engine and fix it up which will be easier to do but could still cost a small fortune or just fuck it and buy a new engine.
Other than SIP any ideas where the best place is to buy shiny new engines?

Crank is proving very very elusive, cylinder can probably be rescued, cylinder head probably can't.
Bearings gaskets etc are same as Sprint I think so thats ok, the weird Femsa coil/flywheel arrangement is available if it needs replacing.
Harrys Scooters in Spain sell quite a few bits.
Its just trying to suss out whether to be lazy now and stick a LML150 or PX200 lump in it and build up the 160 as and when.

That's what I would do.
And keep an eye out for a 160 engine or parts on the continent in the meantime...

being an ex lardy owner and some what obsessed with the GS160, id ditch the original engine to be honest parts for it are impossible to get and its a unique engine that shares no parts with other vespa's.
Theres 2 GS 160 engines on ebay at the moment one at £1200 and the other at £800.
also being piston ported theyre 5% mix and slow too and unreliable so really not worth bothering.
id stick the engine on ebay as individual parts and put it towards a tidy px200 engine. all you need to fit it is the a special engine mounting bracket from SIP and upgrade to 12v wiring

Slow progress but if I finished too quick I'd be bored.
Its all been stripped, etch primed and welded.
I've rebuilt the forks, hub etc completely - pretty much identical to a Sprint front end.
Given the hubs a good covering of Hammerite Smooth silver and they've come up pretty good.
Still thinking about the engine and trying to identify the colour blue that these things only came in, in 1969.
Want to try and keep it as original as pratically possible.

Hi Tonymod - seen your posts quite a few times when I've googled Mototvespa 160 ;D Thanks for the Clasico tip - hopefully between them and Harrys Scooters I'll be able to pick up what I need - once Ive added up what the cost is and decided if its worth the cost. Got any piccies of yours or the build at all ? Mine was stripped down and has been in boxes for 10 years so no chance to take lots of pictures to follow when putting it back together. Not sure its particularly rare but it's certainly a bit of an oddball thats for sure

Couple of boxes from Spain arrived with engine bits and spanish electrics - should be interesting.
I'll post up some pics in a bit, but once the crank is installed and cases put back together how freely should it rotate ?
Turns by hand but it dosent turn by its own weight like the smally crank does.
Cheers.

Pics. Frame blasted and etch primed. [a href=" "] [/a] Floor strut needed weding - not by me though. [a href=" "] [/a] [a href=" "] [/a] Forks before and after. [a href=" "] [/a] [a href=" "] [/a] I'll spare you all the pics of my failed attempts at fitting the crank and bearings and pretend it was a peice of cake ;D Which it actually was once I'd stopped dicking around. And the kickstart spring nearly went across the garage more than once the b`stard. [a href=" "] [/a] And the Haynes actually proved useful - couldnt work out why the cases wouldnt go together - had to fit the kickstart so I could move the quadrant. [a href=" "] [/a]

You'll have this project in the bag soon. I've only built one large frame ('63 VBB) and I remember the same thing with the kicker. I couldn't for the life of me figure it out for a couple of days...

My first lardy too.
Its coming together, but broke a piston ring, put it on upside down - really must get better lighting in the garage.
Thinking of painting it myself - think I saw a post on here somewhere where he used water based paint and just sealed it with clear - might be worth looking into.

I have a set of rings that came with a mix of smallie and lardy stuff. If they match, I'll send em to ya for postage...
