Well that's one way to drain the oil... ;D Nice find mate, looks very straight. Enjoy the project Yeah, strangley it started and I drove it to the garage. Thats all gasoline from the engine.. only loosend up the selector abit and it all came pouring out.. ;D Was expecting something like that cause it was revving like it should with a blown seal. shaggy, I haven t looked that closely but the tire seems to be in the centerline, I think the SS rims are like that..

Yeah, the GS 160 and SS 180 use differant offsets on the rims. Any reason why you're changing to a PX motor? I think the old conversion pistons for the Grimstead Hurricane taking upto 200 or so might still be available if you hunt hard enough. Curare who used to come on here did some intresting stuff with these motors too. www.curareracing.com/71501/51601.html

i would keep the old motor and get it rebuilt rather than put a px motor in...i have a totally standard ss180 and it is so smooth to ride....these days the only way to be different is to use the original motor in things like gs150/gs160/ss180 as everyone puts a px motor in...but its your choice and either way i am sure you will be very happy with it. good luck rob

Plan with the engine swap is to get some reliability for touring. What I understand the std engine is very prone to seize.
As the swap doesnt require any unchangable modifications I think its a good way to go.

the ss motors are a lovely runners and smoooooth Spent tonight browsing the web looking reading bout the SS and starting to lean towards a engine rebuild.. Has anyone here fitted the Vespatronic kit to an oldie? Is it as straight forward as to an smallie?

Great to see O.G. scoots still being found! that'll clean up nicely. I think the only good arguments for swapping to a px motor are-if you don't have the original (like my ss) or if you're using it to commute. Thrashing the SS motor every day would be a little rough considering it's survived so long, and a p-range uses less oil in the mix, so cheaper and is more "green" Otherwise, the ss motor and rear hub look much better, and the wheels are both the same (two different wheels sucks BAD when you get a flat front and only have a p-range spare ahundred miles from no where) As far as electronic conversions go I've been thinking about getting vespatronic for and old wideframe douglas vespa motor (no P-range conversion for me!) and found this link which makes it look A1 super simple. thebrotherswurmbrand.skynetblogs.be/archive/2010/11/17/gunter-s-1959-vespa-gs-150.html

Looking nice. I think you may have an issue with the Prange carb-box hitting the frame. Maybe not an issue if you intended to run the P2 motor full time but for myself I think I'd be inclined to leave it until the SS motor was ready.
I love those old girls, without doubt it'd be the first Lardie in the garage given any choice.

Havent heard of the carb body beeing a problem..but I guess I´ll find out in the next few days. Havent done a lardie engine before so I want to take my time and get it right the first time. I have so many other small things I want to get done during the driving season so 200 for now is gonna be, next summer Ill be enjoying the sound of a piston ported powerhouse.

I rebuilt a Rally 180, which is pretty much the SS180. Put a P200e engine in and then converted to 12 volt as I use it for work as well as runs so wanted a more reliable engine than the 180. Pretty easy to convert, just bought a new loom and it all connected up nicely Rich That reminds me, I need to clean up the old 180 engine and change the seals incase I throw her back in at some stage.

Its on the road! No problem with the engine conversion. With a primmy rim in the back it even goes pretty straight. Still got the electrics to sort out. Previous owner took it for a spin, could really see how he felt shit bout selling it.. ;D
