ouch ... out of interest im from cheltenham who is your mate I was from 'Nam until I moved to Bath a few years ago. My mates called Mark and he lives on a farm just outside Charlton Kings. I used to live on the London Road next door to the Duke Of York (before it closed down)

The barrel might be fixable without re-boring. you could try to get the aluminium debris off the cylinder liner using caustic soda which etches the ally but not the cast of the barrel (goggles and decent gloves are minimum PPE requirement to do this). new piston is required anyway, unless you can free the ring remains and restore the ring groove (warden file and emery).
PS: what is the exhaust port width? looks rather daredevilish for standard DR-rings.
