ring your friend who you borrowed it of and see if his had the same trouble with it.

Yeah, I've already done it. He said that it worked fine with him!

If you're having to press the reset button i'm guessing the motor is tripping out cause it's struggling. However if it's blowing fuses it's likely the current draw when it starts up is too great for a 13amp plug/cable. If you're using a 'thin' extension cable you shouldn't be btw ;D What is the spec of the compressor, hp, recommended voltage, air cfm, what brand and model, is it a belt drive or direct drive motor/pump, etc? Other possiblities are the 'soft start' is buggered - this is a valve that lets out a large hiss when the tank is full, basically relieves the pressure in tube leading to the tank so that when the motor starts back up again it has much less of a struggle to get going. If the engine is a belt drive can you turn the fan (therefore the pump) by hand? My motor had a spate of tripping out but this was caused by a faulty valve actually within the pump cylinder which was causing an air lock, very unlikely to be your problem but ya never know... Gimme some more details and we'll get to the bottom of it they're simple machines, i've taken mine apart a couple of times after lots of reading of the compressor section of the mig welding forum

I second the use of a thin extension. Mine will trip breakers if the extension is too long, or too small. This is because the motor does not get enough voltage to start properly and stays in the starting mode which pulls too much current for too long. Try to plug it in at a known good receptacle with no extension to see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for replies.
It did work ok first time I used it. The fuse was fine, I just changed it to make sure.
Ben, compressor is a Clarke Ranger 35, 1.5 HP. I'll take a picture of the spec plate tomorrow. I think the recommended voltage is 230v.
I'll try and give you more info tomorrow.
Ciao

1.5 hp max, thats rubbish. we can get some more out of that i'm sure... maybe if we use another dyno it would look better.. as for ben surfing the mig welder forum well, i don't know what to say really.. ;D

;D After paying a garage £65 just to weld a frame strut onto my lammy i thought i'd better get a mig and learn to diy if i wanted to get into this scooter lark Ok max, so it's a direct drive which is a bit of a bugger cause you can't just pull the motor or pumps off... but a few more questions... When you said it makes a funny noise, is it the motor basically humming cause it can't turn the pump which in turn trips the motor? when you turn it off (last time it worked), using the on/off switch on the little black box NOT the mains switch, did it hiss like it was releasing the pressure in the pump so it would start easier. Try draining the tank, certainly cause it's quite a small tank the motor will be running a lot and the air gets hot, moisture collects inside. Once it's empty try starting it again, like monza said plugged into a socket on your house mains supply. Bet the misses will be happy, those direct drives make a f'ing racket ;D There is the possiblity that you've just been unlucky and the motor has chosen a bad time to shit the bed Although it's a good sign it's trying to turn over...
