so how do i go about changing them? not done it before, what tools are needed? the vma1 cases have 2 separate metal tubes into the rubber each side, the newer pkxl 2 cases have a solid rod with 2 nylon ends in the rubber are these interchaneable

yep there swappable , the vma1 cases would of had a solid bar originally too . a old drill bit an drill rubber til its destroyed then 2 screwdrivers an lever it out . clean up the holes an red grease new mounts an a threaded bar n big sockets an pull new in ,ya want 195mm width when done .H

I've read that you should avoid using grease with the rubbers since it can degrade them over time. Talcum powder is the way to "lube" the rubbery things up for forced penetration.

"red grease" is not any red coloured grease, It's a special brake assembly grease that is rubber friendly.
