so, get home tonight and look her in the eye ....... must strive on! There is some good news, she starts straight away after putting stator back on and there is a current coming from the stator wahoooo all is not lost! Looking at my wiring diagram am I right in thinking that the main power source goes to the regulator (black wire) and then to the main connector. I can see on the diagram theres black, green and blue coming form stator .... green goes to ignition, blue to horn, black seems to go to a junction then branch off? What does the regulator do and how do i test it or should I bypass and just test all bulb connections with multi meter? Thanks for all your help guys, slowly getting there. ok, figured out black is earth doh! BTW wiring loom ordered

once you get it all sorted you will have the buzz of saying i did it
the regulator limits the voltage going to the lights etc. check ebay for a cheap volt meter dead easy to use
there are better but this will do the job

If it is a three-wire, AC regulator, then it limits the voltage to either 6V or 12v by shorting the excess to ground. Simply test the voltage coming from the stator and going out. If it is going in but not out, the reg is shot. If the voltage is too high check and clean the ground before condemning the reg.

Look at the wire colours and check them on the wiring diagram. My guess would be for a fuel tank sending unit.

In my opinion I would say it appears like some one has previously replaced the loom with a PKXL one, that additional plug connector in the petrol tank well is for a fuel sender unit (which yours does not have) Are you going to replace the indicator /light switches, coil & flasher unit as I recommended? or going to chance it? only looking at the pics your ignition switch housing looks pretty manky as well you can get one for £10. Personally i would also replace the rear light unit with the original PK one looks much better and hey presto you have all new reliable electrics, I know you said money very tight (maybe sell a kidney haha!!) where did you get the new loom from?

new loom is from VE scooters but still waiting 4 days on even after paying next day delivery!!
Im going to see what happens with new loom first, if that doesnt fix issue then will start replacing bits one by one. The light switch is new as I bought that two weeks ago. will also be putting original rear on till it all sorted.

Test and repair the problem. You can spend a lot of money your way.

Test and repair the problem. You can spend a lot of money your way. not sure how .... I was thinking if this doesnt fix the issue then I need to look at regulator surely? or am i missing something as I cant see much to check other than that? your advice would be appreciated

Spending a lot of money? £150 in the grand scheme of things and replace every thing is well worth it. Need lights / indicators working correctly for the MOT. You can test the regulator, I have not known Ducati regulators to fail if it is the original fitted? You can replace it for about £10 (non Ducati on ebay) Warmer scooter riding weather upon us now. How long do you want to be chasing faults, possibly get fed up with it and back in the shed it goes again

UPDATE: The new loom is in and boom she started straight away, all lights working wooohoooooo!!
Need thoughts tho .... On second time starting her she started to die slowly, then couldnt do anything to get her going again, normally she starts 2nd or 3rd kick. Going to leave her overnight just incase i flooded her and kick her tomorrow to see if she starts.

so .... the saga conmtinues, should have posted this in the project section After a couple of kicks and noticing a couple of splutters/backfires I give up and google backfires on kick start. timing? Taking of the flywheel, again .... I noticed it has shaved off the crank what ever you call it so now im left with a dilemma? Do I repair or is it above my pay grade, not sure on this one tbh.

Woodruff key snapped, so it's put your timing out, cheap and easy to replace.

well done with the new loom! yes woodruff key snapped, about 50p to replace. Causes flywheel to move putting timing out. Clear out the grove on the crank with small flat screw driver.
