Good god how lucky I was that the only puller I had at home fitted through the gaps in the clutch basket. To get to the point where you can insert the puller (which has to have its arms disassembled and put into the gaps separately, then reassembled) you have to get the friction plates and steels out of there. This can be dangerous if you're standing right in front of it! Once you have the clutch basket exposed, it's pretty straight forward. I actually even started bending the clutch basket itself, but with enough heat from a compatct torch and a few light hits to the puller (while under a lot of pressure) it came loose.

Had the same problem and had to split the engine to tap the tree out of the clutch basket. It's so easy to cross thread the puller if there's a bit of shit in the thread...

My impression is that sadly the puller usually holds fine and the clutch basket gives up, like in my case
