New stator fits! Didn't have time to do any more today, hopefully get time tomorrow to clean and fit the carb, torque everything up and try kick it over.

IT ONLY FUCKING STARTS!!!
This was the second time I started it. It actually started first sodding kick with the choke. Can't believe it! Still need to work out why it's not happy to idle but at the moment I don't care about that.
Thanks so much to everyone who's given me advice, I couldn't have done it without you.

Well done Leon your persistence paid off just a matter of tuning it up now. :-)

"daddy i'm so proud of you, can we have lunch now i'm starving" said the apprentice . nice job ,well happy for ya . the idling sounded to me like throttle stop set to low an a "tight" new engine . wind the screw in a turn or 2 so its got a fast idle an strobe ya timing to check it , then time to fiddle/fine tune ya mixture screw . ya close to stick it back in an riding ya scoot ,happy days . Cheers lads. Yeah H it only occurred to me later on after I'd calmed down to adjust the throttle screw.
Will get hold of a timing strobe and get it set right, was only set to 16btdc by eye.
Incidentally, would the fact my barrel is at second oversize now, and therefore larger capacity, affect what the optimal timing setting ought to be?

why 16btdc ,thats more a ali/nicasil barrel -variable timing set up an wont help your tick-over . i'd of set to a electronic ets timing of 18degs an see how that fairs ,any hint of pinking under load an retard a degree or 2 . barrel re-bore an larger capacity wont affect timing point , an at 2 sizes over shouldnt need head re-profiling to match the bore .least ive never heard of anybody bothering to do it ,its only .2mm more . Oh right, I went for 16 as I'd read in a couple of places that's what the Polini barrel should be set to. And cheers for the advice re: rebore.

sorry forgotten it was polini ,there timed by mm ,as in 125/130 timed to 2mm piston travel before tdc ,on a 97 rod an 51 stroke 2mm = about 20degs btdc by beedspeeds figures .havent access to others i use as away from home now .think i'd still time to 18 degs , on a iron barrel polini .thats were i'd worked it out for my iron polini/worb5 spec barrel . an keep an ear open for pinking under load . Cheers guys. At the moment 16,18 or 20 makes no odds, as my tiny brain is struggling to comprehend finding tdc never mind 16 degrees before. I have a piston stop and a degree wheel, but once I think I've found tdc, when I take the piston stop out and do an idiot check to see where the piston tops out, it always seems to be miles away from I calculated tdc was. Will have to try again later!

Keep going nearly there, the first start is always ultra enjoyable. Have you got a decent strobe.

One thing that doesn't help is there's no mark on the stator that I can line up with the standard ignition mark on the casings to give me a starting point. The red line below is me extending the standard mark But the stator does have these marks on. I set the stator up to start yesterday just getting it to look roughly in the same position the old one was in when it was still on there. Can anyone shed any light on those marks, or how I can set the timing without a mark down the bottom. This reminds me of trying to do trigonometry at school, makes my head hurt!!

Ignore last post, timing strobe ordered the other day along with 12v battery. Once it arrives I'll stop fannying about and work out TDC and 16 degrees before, then get it lined up properly. New rear hub ordered today too.
If my BMX sells for decent money on ebay I'll get new tyres and a spare wheel holder too, but should be able to MOT it before I get them anyway.
Just need to sort timing, replace front bearings and put everything back together and fingers crossed I'm sorted.
