Posted this on the VCB board, thought I'd post it on here too because you lot are more technically minded than most of them......
Just starting to prepare my P200 engine for my Spanish 150s when I read in last months classic scooterist that a P200 engine won't fit into the 150s frame.....bugger! The frame is at the paint shop so I can't offer the engine up at the moment to check, but if it is the case that the P200 engine is too big for the frame then I am considering putting the original 150s engine back in.
The 150s engine is quite an oddball, it's piston ported but uses later type casings, the nearest Piaggio type equivelant looks to be the SS180 engine.
Does anyone know whether an electronic ignition can be put on these types of engines? (The flywheel taper looks a lot longer and thinnner than the usual PX type) or could a PX/full circle crank be adapted to fit and work with the piston ported induction which would then be easy to fit the electronic kit on?
If I can get Electronic ignition and a cosa clutch in this engine then I'll use it, otherwise I'm on the hunt for a PX150 or T5 engine!
Cheers, Rog

I'm pretty sure it will fit, the only thing that might need modifying is the frame where the carb box might foul.
I think Guy is better placed to answer this but I reckon you'd need a full circle PX crank to fit the ignition. And if it's anything like the GS160/ SS180 motors you'll need one of the 60mm variety.

depends on what the crank taper is like, and the casing design but there is a new kit coming out very soon, PX type electronic 12v conversion, designed to be a straight bolt on to GS160 & SS180 motors. Cant help more than that, never had a spanish piston ported engine, so cant say how close to GS/SS motor they are.
As Niall said in the mag, the P2 motor wont fit.....but at the end of the day, all thatmeans is 'it wont fit without a bit of cutting'....up to you if you want to cut the frame slightly when you get it back, failing that you could always sell the P2 motor and buy a kitted PX125 engine.

Thanks for the replies, I did see the article about the new SS180/GS160 electronic ignitions, I'm not too sure though because the crank taper on mine looks like it would break pretty easily under stress and it has a tiny little woodruff key which most flywheels would eat for breakfast, I'll try and post some pics once I manage to split the casings.
I'd rather not have to cut the frame if possible, especially as the frame is most likely painted by now and tbh I'm not bothered too much about speed, I have my smallies for that!
Are Rally 180 casings still in effect "small block" engines or are the casings and physical size of the barrel bigger?
Just trying to weigh up my options really:
Piston ported 150 engine: +Piston ported is sexy. +Engine will fit in frame with no issues. -45mph top speed isn't cool -Possibly no cheap way to make it electronic ignition
PX200: +Fairly Quick and reliable +I have most of the bit's I need -May not fit into the frame without modding -Doesn't look as vintagely cool
PX125/150: +Should fit in frame ok +Can be kitted easily +Reliable -I don't have one to hand!
I'm thinking the small block PX engine might be the way to go, I can always try shoehorning in the 200cc engine at a later stage.
So does anyone have a good PX125/150/Sprint Veloce engine they would like to sell me? I may possibly be intrerested in some kind of trade for my slightly damaged PX200 casings.

I've done a conversion on one ages ago with that skinny taper crank.. used original boss, fitted to lightened et3 flywheel and stator. Hardest bit was getting the spacing correct for the pic up to align with the contacts. Had to machine a recess in the flywheel to align. Bike still running fine 7 yrs on.

Sounds interesting Tony I've managed to split the casings apart now and everything looks to be in very good nick. Are you still able to do this kinds of conversions? I have a PX150 engine now which I could just slot straight in, but it would be much more fun to put the old 150s engine back in with electronic ign, cosa clutch and a bit of porting ;D Oh, and the casings look like they would have been from the Piaggio Vbb engine moulds because the rotary valve inlet is still machined into the casing only there is no actual hole or rotary pad! Those crazy Spaniards! Rog

Are Rally 180 casings still in effect "small block" engines or are the casings and physical size of the barrel bigger? Pretty much same size as P2. The stud spacing is identical, barrel appears same size as 200. Only difference is crankcase mouth slightly smaller, but not as small as 125-150. If a p2 motor wont fit, neither will the Rally 180.
