Need new top steering bearings for my P2 but all the replacements seem to have smaller diameter bearings in. Does this matter? The ones I got in a full kit for my PK seem a bit "loose" in the bottom race (before I lock them down) but seem fine in the race that they came with. If so any ideas where I can get some the same from? I REALLY don't want to replace the race as it means dismantling the hydraulics on the disc brake.

Cheers Juan. Will count how many ball bearings are in the cage tomorrow. The bearings are about 3.65mm diameter though (had verniers on em) Right gonna go kick something now. Hard

Yep went past Hospital fields on the way home today!
The one I took out had (being the operative word) 20 ball bearings in. the replacement ones I have, have 24.
I could really do with a new top race (the one that screws down) as well, as it has a few marks in.
Alternatively, anyone got any ideas of how to remove the race from the top of the fork tube without drifting it out from below?

Jim, just use blunt chisel and do a bit at a time either side. Best to change em all I reckon..

from the inside of the fork tube do you mean tony? You can't get to it from the outside can you? The top cup is easy to bash out from the inside but I want to avoid having to dismantle the hydraulics. (If I can) REALLY hope its not the bottom one cos both cups/races are a BASTARD to fit and remove. Anyone know if its the top or bottom bearings that normally go (tops have tiny ball bearings, bottom have bigger ones)

If you drop the fork below the height of the cup you can get a chisel to the outside. To remove the bottom one i made a tool which was similar to the orig on but cheap. I took the bottom cup(new one) to a fasteners and bought the biggest washer i could that fitted through it. Then bought a 1m length of corresponding stud and some nuts. On one end bolt up the washer tight and feed down frame-locate the washer lip above the old cup and knock out one side at a time..get better results if top cup is out first. easy ;D

That's exactly how I got the bottom race out of the PK. Easier to get out than put in though!
tried with a threaded bar to pull the top and bottom ones in. Top worked okay, but couldn't get the bottom one in straight. Frame upside down hammer & punch to get that in! Not so easy with engine etc in!
Will have a look at the chisel for the top cup, although I'm leaning towards having the fork out so I can properly "inspect" the bottom races. Be gutted if after changing the tops it was actually the bottom.
