somone said to me recently, that shit timing lights can have a delay and cause you to inadvertantly put you timing out... any truth in this? if so whats a decent light that doesn't cost 80 sheets? cheers o

There is some truth in the rumour but light travels at 96,000,000 MPH so the delay in the flah would be so small i'm sure it wouldn't put your timming out by much, something about the type of bulb they use Zenon or krypton. I got a £20er from halfords never had a problem with it.

infact light travels even faster than that at 286 thousand miles per second which is about 670 milion mph, fuck timing lights i just adjust till it pinks and back it off a bit

yeah i was of the opinion that leccy traveled at the speed of light and obviously light does, light speed is constant so where can the variability come from?? i guess bulbs have to heat up to produce light so the performance of bulbs may vary?? my dads got one of those ancient ones that go inline with the ht and have no other power source, reckon i'll scab that one.. i hear you have to rev abit to get any light out of them though?

the speed of electricity travels at the speed of light in a vacuum (not vacuum cleaner) and nearly as fast in air and different materials also vary but copper as in your loom is about 3/4 to 2/3 of the speed of light, not that this will help you in any way with your timing but suffice to say that the delay in the strom would be so small it would be out by about a millionth of a degree which is fuck all, thats todays lesson over it made my head hurt

I think the error comes with bad detection of spark, poor conversion of detection to flash and the reliability of a 12v power source (batteries don't always give a consistent output). I've got my dad's old one that runs off the mains. Saying that though I know people who swear by the 'non-powered' ones, Sticky recommends AC ones and a mate who will only use his battery one, lol.
