IMHO only necessary if you are turning serious rpm and have a lot of torque. If you're just doing a mild tune Malossi or Polini then no. But if you're welding your cases for more meat and using one of the bigger tuning kits that will offer more rpm then yes.
The way I weld a pin is such....may not be the way others do it but at least it's a way I can get it out easier later if needed.
With a dremel or grinding stone make a shallow divot at the edge of the pin and the web....so its overlapped each. Do it again 180 degrees from that point. Flip the crank over and do the same thing on on the other side of the pin.
Then TIG weld the 4 divots....basically fill the holes. This is PLENTY welt to hold the pin. I've seen so many attempts at crank welding where the 'expert' had welded the shite out of the pin only to take the whole crank out of true. Try truing a crank after the pin has been welded. Impossible. It becomes a door stopper.
Good luck.

If you ever feck your rod and need to replace it you only need to grind out the four little welds rather than a long ring of redundant weld on each side....actually....only need to press out one side really but you get the idea. Less work is aways better. Dennis
