what airfilter do you use? is it possible to have too much air as my scooter seems to run fine with the airfilter with sponge but wont run for longer than 20 seconds without the filter

well i use a polini airbox which doesnt even have a filter element in and it runs fine. if its running well, i wouldnt worry about it, better for the engine to have a decent filter

Probally because the filter is creating a 'air box' kind of like an air ritch environment for the carb to draw it in to the engine, rather then the carb having to draw it in from nothing.

Apart from crap getting inside your engine.... Having too much air, yes, can be a prob. you can lean out. You may think you're running great. Revs out nice and clean, sure. All lean running engines will do that. Do this for too long under load and it is sure to seize up.

I have never run any of my engines well with an air filter on, but I appreciate alloy and nicasil barrel would probably be less forgiving forgiving to an ingress of dust and shite.
Can't even run my lammy with a filter on and the carb is set up leaner than a lean thing .
