Before xmas I built myself a 5 plate clutch. I wasn't sure if it was going to work as due to the weather I couldn't road test it. Well, as it was a nice sunny day yesterday, I went for a ride and I'm happy to say that it works!!! ;D The clutch is based on the XL2. I had the newfren race with carbon plates from SIP. When Tony built my motor, he fitted a GSF repair kit (which was a bit of a pain : and shimmed the xmas tree and kickstart quadrant. However, the newfren spider was rubbing slightly on the primary and had to be skimmed. Also we had to fit stronger springs (12 of them) and a DRT top plate. I've managed to do over a 1000 miles until the woodruff key sheared off. I decided then to try the Piaggio spider...got myself some Race Evo plates and 12 springs from the Race kit. The Piaggio spider is higher than the newfren and gives better clearance on the primaries. As I started to build the clutch, I noticed that there was room for an extra plate so I thought, what the hell, lets give it a try! ;D Pics where taken before I tidied everything up but you should get the idea. I didn't use the XL2 push plate with the bearing at the end as with the primmy clutch cover the plunger was pushing constantly on the plate thus, making the clutch slip (I will try to source an XL2 clutch cover soon). looks good Max next time you ever open it up and take the clutch out take some photos,,
you can always shave the plunger down a bit and file a nice X on top or you can run it smooth until you find a cover...
what primarys are you running in that beast?

Primaries are 26/69. I know I could have shaved the plunger (couldn't be arsed! : but it works well with the V range push plate. ;D

You don't need that woordruff key. Most people with powerfull engines use grinding paste to improve the fit of the spider on the layshaft and fit everything without a woodruff key. Some of the new clutches don't even have the keyway any more.

nice Max, have you got a spare bearing push spring? the wire that holds it in? mines never sat as flush as yours in the pic and has worn slightly lol

Because I'm in the middle of rebuilding my bike for the coming race season... Here's what I ran for the last few rounds: 2 Polini aluminum plates, 2 red carbon Newfren regular thickness plates & 1 malossi thinner carbon. Thin steels. Drt 8 spring setup.

Going to rebuild my clutch on weekend with 4 Newfren cork plates, I will have a look to see if I can fit an additional carbon one in now after reading this ;D

went out yesterday, and dame the clucth is slipping bad in first only been in about 5 months, mind i do ride hard ;D. may have to get my hands dirty and do it myself as im now out of work nice job there fellas.

Well it's not 5 plate but... I was having trouble on the track with my clutch. basically I was getting maybe a day out of a conventional 4 plate so I came up with this based on a standard (read not PKXL) PV Clutch. Basically it is: DRT Top Plate 8 springs Self made spring holder 4 Polini friction plates thin 1mm or less plain steel plates Aluminum Primary (tho I think that any one would work) This put an end to my clutch problems for the season. Next year with a FALC will be the real test.

That spring holder is a clever idea. What are these springs?
You guys really don't have any problems with the clutch dragging when it's hot? I always had that with the 1mm steelplates. If, in a race, you had to restart, it would always drag. I then made my own clutch which uses 4 thick plates and 8 springs. Still that was a bit shit and I went for the Hartz IV as soon as it was available.
