Because I like to share... In case you were thinking 'Yeah, that 20 mil taper race crank should be good for more than one race season... I've never run anything but the lightest of flywheels on there... I should be fine...My bike isn't creating THAT much power, right?' Wrong. Kicking myself now because I could have had the 24mm taper for the same $. I just didn't like the looks of the seal you have to use.

What happened there, don't look like it has snapped. Has it just come out of the crank?

Whoa that's mad! Agree with massimo has it just come out the center of the crank?!?!

On a happier note... While on the hunt to find a machine shop to take care of my case repair needs, I came across a place where I was greeted with "Weird shit? We love weird shit. Check this out..." Not a replica. It IS the 1963 Ed Roth "Road Agent".

Oi Paddy.. bin that kickstarter gear and get a closer ratio box in there crank wise.. oops... might be worth spending some top money on a proper race item. Go with Falc and buy direct from him as its loads cheaper.

I hear ya on the Falc note, Tony. Having to compromise for a bit longer 'til my allowance improves. This adventure cost me a points necessary date for our cup series season. Getting the case taken care of first, then gonna see what my options are. Toying with the kickstart delete as I'm there already. I run with some guys using the shorter ratio primaries. It might be me, or it might be them, but I seem to out-accelerate them already... I dunno if that's my ticket yet. I do have the straight cut gearing & I like the looks of the variable tooth count DRT cogs. - And yes, I already have the short 4th.

short 4th? I'm on about a 55 first from drt... close 2 , 3 and 4 Gear for 40 (on kart tracks) in first and get very quick acceleration. ;D

Another piece to my crank dilemma is port timing. I know that to continue to satisfy the ever increasing hunger for more power, I'm most likely looking at something with a larger than 51mm stroke. If I do that now, I need to do something really creative with the cylinder I already have or get a whole other cylinder kit... I had already set up this barrel with 190 exhaust & 129 transfers. When the stroke gets longer, those go all over the place. The power I had was pretty useable... So I'm torn between spending the dough to go back to what I had, or spend more dough for something that might make the bike really finnicky for output. Blah...

I think at the end of the day paddy its all down to how much do you want to spend. I know the esc boys are doing ok witha 54mm in a M1L ( the new version) not the R. This gives good timings and they seem to like it. Or.. you go all out with Falc.. or try the new parma but i've not seen that barrel yet. OR.. you go 54 and start again with a malossi as I think its low enough to work with at 54mm stroke.

What do you need to do to run a 24/25 crank in et3 cases ?
Thanks to everyone, all of you have helped a lot.

What do you need to do to run a 24/25 crank in et3 cases ? You'll need a conversion bearing (6005 C3) and a larger oil seal.

Okay... because conclusions are fun... Got my hands on a 54/105 20mil taper mazzy crank. The price was right (thank you Germany). Long term thinking a nicer 24mil taper is inevitable. I don't have any long term expectations for the mazzy, but it will allow me to finish the race season & move up the power tree a little bit. 1.5mm off the case at the cyl. base. 6.5mm base packer. 3.7mm head gasket. Port timings ended up @ 132 transfer & 190ex. - Had to raise the ex. an additional 2mm to get that. Fired it up tonight, gotta drive to Canada tomorry to go to the rally & race on Sunday. Got some more tuning to do when I get there for sure. Hep' me Jeebus.

...Aaand now that our race season has come to a close over here, & for the purposes of sharing my own experiences: I underestimated the difference that the 54/105 crank would make not just jetting/timing wise, but also primary compression & pipe usability wise. When I went to race in Canada following that last post, I was a bit let down as I could immediately tell the bike wasn't making nearly the power that it had before. Lots of down low grunt, but no high or midrange - needless to say it was a humbling (4th place) race for yours truly on a track that I really like: I finally found some time to play with it before the next race. I traded out carbs (from a 36mm Kiehin D slide to a VHSB 34) & tried a different exhaust (from a VSP2 race to a Ludwig & Scherer '55')& got better results after lots of jetting & playing with timing. I was still not fully convinced though. I had a gut feeling that the Kiehin was producing better power down low. I am normally a dellorto purist, but in putting the Kiehin back on... the difference was immediate. The 55 was previously not very useful as far as output. At this point, I'm actually pretty happy with it. The last race of the season was at a local & remarkably technical track. Practice Saturday had gone well & I was pretty satisfied with the way it was running. Notably more power at low, mid, & higher revs. Sunday rolled around & it was a cold, dew laden morning that refused to warm up until about noon. I went out with a couple of the non-scooter classes for the heats to get the tires warmed up & renew my mental notes about my lines around the track: I was pretty pleased with myself about having done this as when it was our turn to go out, I felt more confident on the first few laps & got a pretty good lead in both races from the hole shot. While that sounds exciting... I came off in one race & still managed to take 3rd. During both mains for me I'll confess - I got tired. Yep. I'm not in that great of shape & my clutch hand started to give up. Couldn't hold on to the (newish to me) DRT 8 spring setup. I tried taking a different line to use the clutch less & it didn't work. I held him off for as long as possible, but my friend Brian ended up getting around me & a missed shift on my part later, the damage was done - I took second. Not bad, but it never tastes as sweet when you hold a good lead for 5-6 of the 8 laps... I missed a cup series season points podium placement by 1 point. The guys who did beat me for those points certainly earned it. There are some great riders out here. Dayn took 1st, Drat took 2nd, & Johnny took 3rd for the season. For the 2 classes I race in the cup, I did take 2nd place in both for my season long points spread: All in all, I ended up participating in 13 race track events this year spreading from April to October. 13 might be more than I care to tackle in the future unless some of my financial parameters change... ;D I'm glad to have a break for now, but I can't stop perusing new components for next year... Here are some tidbits from Drat's onboard cam: www.youtube.com/user/wussy05?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/RvkWlrcpNxU

Shit, I didn't know there was scootering in Portland. I was in Ashland last year, flew in via Portland. The tracks look awesome. What engine are you using? The 55 is a Falc specific pipe, just wondering what it is you're running. Where did you get it from?
Sorry about all the questions, I'm really excited because you live in the states and use this pipe. It really makes my day to hear things like that.

Thanks fellas! I do plan on continuing to post updates on here for our next season. I'm aware that there are some other state-side lurkers on here as well. 'zombi - Ashland? I didn't take you for the Shakespearean hippie type...? ;D ;D Yeah, there's a pretty healthy scooter scene in Portland. Part of what makes our race season good is the fact that Portland, Seattle, & Vancouver BC all have strong scooter scenes & we've been going to eachother's rallies for years. The racing has been just another avenue to get to hang out & exchange notes on tuning & BS. Each city is approximately a 3 hour drive from one to the next, so not a huge effort to attend eachother's events. Motor-wise - I am using a chopped up cylinder inducted Malossi cylinder. Custom manifold using a vforce3 banshee reed. Decided to hold off on getting something more exotic just yet (maybe next season if my sponsors give me the go). GS piston w/ a MMW matched head. I got the 55 from Marco @lth. Vespatronic & 5 plates in a DRT 8 spring clutch. I did enjoy the challenge of playing with the malossi to see how much it would put up with. It was surprising durable & made pretty surprisingly good power for our shenanigans this year... Cheers, - Paddy
