Now this sounds stupid but i must ask, i took the head of my barrell to see if it is a genuine et3 ,with the piston down i can see 3 ports the same size and 1 bigger port which i presume is the exhaust port is that right, the stator is electronic but when i put engine number on the identication site it says cant find or words to that effect.

bear in mind the barrel (or cases) could have been changed, so the casings and the barrel may not be from the same bike originally

Engine prefix should be VMB1M.

cheers breezer, right what i can see is v??2? and above it are the numbers 0164610, i spoke to harry barlow and he said check if it is electronic which it is and take the head of and see if its a 3 port, like i say it has 3 ports of the same size and one larger which i presume is the exhaust port. With the numbers i have written i cant get up an identification, is there another way of identifying it

As I've said above, ET3 prefix is VMB1M.
The prefix VMA2M is the primmy (which looks like yours?).

Could still be an ET3 barrel dropped onto other cases. The 3 ports Harry will be referring to are the transfers on the base so you'll need to take off the head and slide it up the studs. The traditional 90 / Primmy etc barrels will have 2 transfers ports where the ET3 and ETS had an extra small auxillary port at the bottom.

ET3 stands for electronic transfers 3, exactly like the T5, but Max can give the Italian lessons. ;D

Mind you, I have just checked my ET3 engine and the prefix is V5A1M! Anyway, the VMA2M is deffo primmy.

head off, piston to bdc and there should be 4 ports, ex, 2 trans and 1 boost.

just lifted up barrell and 2 large ports and 1 smaller which looks slightly higher, had another look at prefix and all i can be sure of is the v, i got my wife to have a look and she says maybe vmh217, its that hard to read its like its scratched on, but the number above is well stamped, can you not id from the stamped no or can it only be the scratched on prefix.

Sounds like you've got an ET3/S barrel at least Mark, do the cases have the 3rd port cut or not?
I'd not worry about prefixes unless you're dead set on getting things bang on and it's a pretty easy job to Dremel out anyway. If you're thinking Parma or M1 like you were on about elsewhere then the 3rd transfer is redundant anyway.

Juan your right i will just change engine no when i put bike in my name and forget it, yes i am getting it kitted up but maybe polini with some barlow porting work not sure yet, what does the s after et3 stand for mate, also the third port on casings is that where the barrell and casings meet because i took the barrell of and there are only 2 ports on the top of casings and the gasket is bigger than transfers

Most PK125s had the 3rd port as well.

Mind you, I have just checked my ET3 engine and the prefix is V5A1M! Anyway, the VMA2M is deffo primmy. V5A1M is an early 50 engine fitted to every V50 (N, L, R) until the first three speed specials (V5A2M). the last of the v5a1m was produced around '73/'74 , cant remember exactly, for a vespa R. When the special become 4 gears (V5A4M) the old 3 speed V5A2M passed over to the 50R until the early '80s As Max says the primmy is VMA2M and the ET3 is VMB1M. Therefore Max, I'm sorry to say your engine isn't an ET3.

ETS being as i cant read my prefix apart from it starts with a v can you idetify it by the engine number?

ETS being as i cant read my prefix apart from it starts with a v can you idetify it by the engine number? Sorry Mark, the prefix is essential. There are some other little details that may help identifying a particular engine but it isn't an exact science. The cruciform can tell if an engine is before or after 1977, the "blind elestart" can say if it's a PK or previous models, so can the crank taper. Essentially though all smallframe engines are pretty much the same and 1 set of casing can be transformed in something else changing very little. i.e. older v50 engines can become ET3 only changing crank, top end, gear ratio, adding the fourth gear and swapping the ignition. Some more are the differences between PKs and previous models but essentially nothing too difficult.

does it matter what the prefix says ? mine is vma1m but a primmy is vma2m now the cases are exactly the same and no doubt the same as a 50 special v5b3m so it dont really matter about the prefix unless you wanna buy bits for it, ie when the bearing sizes (flywheel side) and different cranks etc, my logbook doesnt show a prefix just numbers, i even have a bare case with no numbers from the factory, so buy some stamps and make it what you want, it wont change the cases as there mostly the same
