Hi all, Just about to start my rebuild/resto of my 1968 Primmy.... but i have a question On the legshield is the original suppliers badge, is there a way i can keep it ie mask off and respray ... or shall i remove and go ahead as normal with full respray etc I like the idea of keeping it, as it is completely standard bodywise and still has its original paint... not bad for 41 years! Your ideas viewpoints would be appreciated Ta SP

If the rest of the paint is anywhere near as good as that then leave it well alone. That has history, as soon as you repaint it's just another restoration.
I'm I great believer in preservation over restoration if at all possible.

Hi Juan, I totally agree, i would really like to keep the badge, however, the rest of the paintwork is far from like the picture. The badge appears to have been preserved by the addition of an 'L' plate which is why is looks so good.... you can just make out the square shape in the picture. SP

That is a great piece of history, is there no way it can be removed and re-applied..?, it looks almost like a water slide decal..!! With guitar repairs we use waterslide decals for the headstocks then varnish over the top, not sure if a laquer would work the same way. But to remove the old logos they have to be sanded off and there is no way you can preserve them, or mask around them without it being obvious. The repro stuff we use for guitar headstocks is almost identical from the real things. To start I would have myself a good high resolution photograph without flash or glare just for reference for the future.

Cheers for the comments.... i do want to keep the sticker but really wanted to get the frame blasted prior to paint.
I have just found a local guy who blasts using baking soda, it is very metal friendly and i'm sure that if masked off properly, it could be kept.
Fortunately as you can see the paint is very good around the sticker, so it maybe possible to mask and match the paint, fiddly i know, but worth it i think.
Thanks again.. i'll keep you posted with before and after pics when complete.

If you could get a good photo of it Mark at Lambretta Art
lambretta-artATukonlineDOTcoDOTuk
could make you a new one - it would have the aged look of the original too...

before you do anything try a high res photo, laser print onto waterslide paper, and try some laquer over the top on a piece of scrap to see the effect on the waterslide, should be ok, im sure ive used car laquer on a fender headstock before, we use cellulose base now to help age them. Get a good photo up face on and im sure a few people on here can high res a photoshop image for you to try printing out. That font would be a bitch though as it looks hand painted.

That maybe sounds like a plan..... here is a close up of the badge... its probably the best i can get it. I don't think my printer is upto doing a decent print... how does this get placed onto a waterslide? is it a special process? Thanks SP

you need to use your original photograph hopefully you used the highest setting on your camera as its needs to be the highest resolution possible for printing, normally we use 300dpi for printing or graphics, so the best setting on your camera the better, that image is a good one but will have been optomised for the web, probably automatically by the forum software so a web version is no good to use, its best to use straight from your camera for priniting. You can do this process at home printing onto waterslide paper with a laser priter, (not normal inkjet as it will run) stewart may be able to help as he knows a guy who prints stickers and he may be able to print waterside, the paper is available to buy on the web or even maybe at pc world. It's not expensive, just google it. A good print shop may even have some software like positive fractals to explode it up to about the size of the side of your house, then print normal size, the better and bigger the image, the better it is for printing, as we shrink it down to the correct size.
Hope thats not too confusing,Stewart may be able to help, I will see my guitar guy today too, you do realise that if you get it printed, you will probably be able to sell a shit load of them...!!!!! ;D send me the original image off the camera and i will take a look at it, I have messaged you. Paul
