Hi Guys
I have to change a old broken speedo to one of my scoots and I was wondering what the score is with MOT's and insurance and the mileage discrepancy. I.e. on my old odometer it says 23.000 miles and the one I'm about to fit only about 6.000. Are they going to find problems with it?

Depends from who does the MOT. When I had the first one done on mine, the speedo wasn't working ( I had no cable!!!) and passed.
;D

I am not concerned about not passing it, what bugs me is the palaver about hpi checks, mileage fraud and all of that... When a vehicle is examined for the MOT all of the details are passed to DVLA and put on record.

If I remember correctly a speedo isn't a MOTable item. If you're unsure then inform the relevant parties that it's been changed as the old one was buggered so it was replaced.

Can't you take the old mileometer out of the old speedo and fit it in the replacement one?

When I recently bought my new (old ;D) car, the seller was under no obligation to disclose the current mileage of the vehicle when sorting out the business with the V5, so I'm sure you will be OK. The V5 was sent away without any details of the current mileage, so I'm sure that the records that the DVLA keep arn't 100% correct.

when I took my scoot for its MOT, the first in at least 20 years, I recorded the mileage as "1" as my digital speedo blew up on the way to the test centre. However I currently have a normal type speedo in there as a temporary measure. Its not connected and also reads "1" so I am not really telling any lies am I? Doesnt register speed either, but as its reg'd as a 90 still I dont need to have that facility! And its the wrong colour on the V5 and the wrong address. And I only have the one L plate Looking forward to the day I get pulled

first time i got pulled was in a local carpark, me and my mate where buzzing about on eachothers scoots. 2 mins later a copper comes and tells me hes going to do me for section blah blah blah and being a carpark terrorist anyway about the mileage, like people have said on your V5 you dont have to put the mileage

Looking forward to the day I get pulled my 50spesh cutdown (only thing road legal was the brakes...) was stolen equipped with the plates form my VNB. that was not a fun day at the police station, but i got off free AND got the scoot back... "we are cops for a reason, we are not stupid... do you know what the penalty for document forgery is? "

I think I'd have been telling them the plates were on the workbench and they got taken too

for an mot you must have a speedo but it does not have to work! i have put my lambretta through 5 mot's with the speedo showing 1 mile and no problems. like people said its at the discrection of the owner if you want to log milage with the dvla but not compulsory

don't know how many of you who changed your cylinder volume in your registration document from 50cc to say THREE TIMES AS MUCH, after you all kitted your scooters? ;D needless to say, I think vespa people are amongst the bikers the police worries the least about.
