I have replaced the original 3 plate clutch in my 50 special for. A standard 4 plate clutch. I now have a problem that the clutch isn't engaging when in gear. The scooter creeps forward and stalls. When riding all the gears can be had without issue. Before the original 40 year old clutch finally burnt out it was a dream. I fitted a new spring and it has been adjusted as far as it can be.
Any hints on what to look at or what to try next would be appreciated..

It can be a sod to to but basically you want to lever the clutch arm slightly forward before fitting the nipple. I use a long socket extension bar pushed forward with my knee to get the arm that little bit further forward- make sure the cable adjuster is wound right in before hand.

Single spring, four plate clutches are often "draggy". The first thing to try is making sure that the spring is perfectly square. Place it on a flat surface and place a flat steel plate on top. Is it square? Same distance all the way around? If not bend it until it is. That should help.
Better yet, pay attention to what you wrote: " the original 40 year old clutch finally burnt out it was a dream". I would dump the four plate clutch and simply fit new plates to your old clutch and keep on happily riding.

Thanks for the tips. I will try and get another look at it over the weekend. One thing I thought about is I have changed my levers to dogleg. Gonna try the I'll d ones and see if there is anymore travel on the lever.
I'll update it as I go along

Dogleg levers give less cable pull for sure.

Ffs - if you cant relay the complete story why ask for advice...?

the spring could also be too long and get coilbound before the plates separate, you need to also make sure that when the clutch is compressed it does so evenly on the spider, if its on the wonk you will get drag as jb has said, you need it to separate by 1mm to make it work well, a bit of spring work is all you really need to do
