Is it possible to upgrade the gear selector that the gear cables connect to on the bottom of the case, have a 66 ss90 and have tried to adjust the cables but it wants to slip into gear from neutral , even with no cables on it when i rotate the wheel it can jump into gear, my concern is when i've started it it go into gear and clear off without me. On later small frames they have a ratchet wheel with notches in them so much better to steady the whole gear selector position, can this fit my bike . or do i need to keep frigging with this stupid difficult cable adjustment.

If you have been messing with the pulley inside the head set make sure you have not got it upside down, I have done this in the past and as you say it jumps into gear when it wants to
IN A VERY SCARY WAY!!!!!!!!
Otherwise it could be that the selector inside the case is worn , but this usually shows as difficulty in staying in gear .

Hi not touched the head set and it worked with a different engine in fine, so is the ss motor that does like to stay in neutral no issues with the gears or jumping in or out . will play with the stupid cable arrangement that vespa have, much easier on a lambretta as its on top and more accessible. perhaps i should buy another Lambretta. if anyone has any tips to sort this please tell me cheers

Looks like i have cracked it, was just down to cable adjustment in the end. the vespa cable system is a real pain 4th adjustment to get to this. would have got it right the first time i reckon , but watched a video on Youtube how to adjust and not tight, so did that and that was the issue , not tight enough.

Thank god ,thought i got it sorted , i have sorted now as there was 3 issues.
Issue 1. the outer cables were to short and i noticed it when i removed the speedo / headlamp one of the outers had dropped out of the retainer clamp in the headset and was moving up to the nipple, and the case adjusters had to be screwed right out, so i added a short bit of outer to each one, lovely now.
Issue 2. The inner cables were shit and one was frayed inside the outer cable and out of view , changed to teflon coated inners smooth as silk.
Issue 3. the main one,, the gear selector was not in the real true neutral position, it had been adjusted to a false neutral position between two gears, that's why it was jumping out of gear. I found the best way was to set the selector batwing in first gear by hand , adjust that cable then move to 4th gear by hand and set the other cable, and fine tune the screw adjusters to line up the dots on the handlebar. all works a treat now . back in love with it now.
