Hello
Samuli from Helsinki, Finland. Found and bought as old as I am, 1975 125 Primavera about month ago.
New to Vespa's and even tho I have riden, don't haven't owned a lot's of bikes. I've been playing mostly with cars. Mainly MX-5's, few 944's NA and Turbo's, AE86, old Mini and Westfield SE. I have imported 11 cars (RHD&LHD) from UK over the years, most of them were NA MX-5's and used to waste a lot of time in MX5Nutz pages, if anyones familiar with it. Of bikes I've had -83 125 Yamaha DT as a teen and last year I had Suzuki Bandit 1200 for little while, loved the torque of it but it was just too fast.
Friend bought -63 Vespa 90 last year for next to nothing from original owner and I fell in love. Gotta have me own. It took a year of searching before same friend of mine called, my Vespa's sale ad had just gone online, all I read was price and that it had started on first kick after winter. Called just to ask address and headed to see it, on the way I read the ad and found out it was same year as I was and it had Polini 133cc with Polini banana. Engine had been re build in 2000's by seller's big brother and Polini set had been installed by a local Vespa garage.
Two owner family's, both friends and neighbours, first owned it from new to 1991 and then sold it to seller's family, who owned it since. No obvious crash damage to be seen, it has been painted from red to yellow and back to red. Not bad but it looks too thick.
In advert seller stated that it had bad coil, front brake didn't release all the way and 3rd and 4th gear's had problems to stay on the gear. I could care less, price was right (some one called and tried to buy it without seeing it), so 26 minutes from the friends phone call I had Vespa.
Coil died on the way to home so I found out that it is extremely light to push. Ordered new from SIP and while I was waiting parts to arrive I went through the carburator, it had 60/80 jets and all was in good order. With new coil, spark plug wiring and hat installed it started with first kick.
Been driving it since as much as I could.
Lubed and adjusted the clutch cable, it did help a little bit with stiff clutch. Changed gearbox oil's, old ones were nice and clean. Electrics need some love, brake light isn't working.
Greased the from suspension and found out that the front shock has no life left. So it needs new suspension, been thinking about YSS X-Pro but not sure about it (it needs some fiddeling to fit) and been looking at BITUBO and SIP, but those are almost quadruple in price wise, do don't know are they yet worth. Open to all ideas?
Now waiting for new PTFE cable set arriving from SIP with front brake shoes, got rear shoes and new chrome rim from friend.
Trying to learn all of it (ADD helps) and all advices are more than welcome.
To Do list is growing, sofar...
- New suspension, I need to order it ASAP, but what to get?
- Cruciform or Gear selector (not sure which one is causing the gears to jump?)
- Clutch upgrade, feels like it is sliping a bit on second gear and it is heavy to use, but let's see with new cables.
- What else it needs when doing the former?
- Lights
- Check spark plug color
- Change self taping screw from front lamp to locking bolt
- Seat
In future I would like to get it repainted, install modern CDI and add front disk brake.
Few more pics.
That's for now, thank you for reading.
Cheers
Samuli
