www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/mod_ukSaw this on the BBC news page. In my younger days I was a Mod but drifted out of it as I got more into scooters and the snobbery of some parts of the Mod scene, as I have got older I have drifted more back into it in regards to clothes and having spent a few years down London got to a couple of Mod clubs where I was opened up to a load more music rather than the revival stuff that influenced me in my younger days. Lots of different facets to Mod I guess but there is still an element of snobbery there though.

As a kid I suppose I took an interest through "that film" although never classed myself as a Mod for more than about a week. Still love The Jam and will admit the likes of The Lambrettas and Merton Parkas recorded a few good tracks but was always more on the side of the Rudeboy / 2 Tone side of things back then. No time for any sort of fashion these days but a good track will always stand the test of time.

Interesting read and some good photos. I started out as a mod and use to go to the barrel organ in Birmingham. I still like the music but the only thing that i can is still mod related is that i always have a pair of tassel loafers ever since i had my first pair. Now most of the time i look a scruff.

Some great pics there.
I used to class myself as a mod (though I doubt many in the actual mod scene would agree I looked like one) having become a Jam fan and started wearing my cousins hand me downs in the early 80s, but over the years I became put off by the snobbery of some at one end of the scale and the comedy appearance of Wellends and the like at the other. These days I look more like an aging football casual, and my music taste is more obscure fey/jangly indie and shoegaze than mod sounds.

Ah but what is "Mod sounds" Leon? if you cover the whole era of the genre over the decades then the different music listed to by the various re-incarnations covers a wide range of tastes and styles. Personally I am a sucker for a driving Hammond sound and recently tend towards the freakbeat side of things a little. The New Untouchables albums are great as they cover a wide spectrum of what was going on back in the day (not mainstream pop though) but I also love the Chords and Secret Affair and there are a lot of good modern "Mod" bands about - recent faves for me are Men of North Country and The Strypes.

Fair point mate, I was probably being lazy with that term. And if you class Acid Jazz as mod (which I wasn't thinking of when I posted) I do like a lot of that. I guess I was thinking predominantly as 60s soul, RnB and reggae (and to be fair I like that stuff), forgetting that the music will have evolved over the years.

Indeed Leon, just goes to show how wide a variety there is out there just within the "Mod" genre, one of the things I liked about being posted to W London for a few years, I was able to discover a wider range of "Mod" music down there, unfortunately up here in NE Scotland they were still playing the same stuff when I got back as they were when I left 10 years earlier!!
I have put a couple of links for Men of North Country that you might like on the "WHat are you tapping your feet to" thread.

Oh yes I was a mod and can confirm Steve was a hippy. Although I have had bikes, big autos and scooters, I did follow the live and let live mantra, with the odd chuckle at the 50+ comedy mods, until I saw the photo on fb of the guy with HORSE BRASSES sewn onto his parka.
Although my music tastes have developed over the years into most types. My best of mod music is played as much as my best 6 albums of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
