Hi, last summer i bought a lambretta sil vjay 150 super project. When i got it back home i just threw a cover over it and had a good look at it yesterday evening. I must of had the rose tinted glasses on when i bought it, it's in bad shape but after taking the panels off what i can see of the frame and engine looks ok'ish. The kickstart turns but sometimes gets caught on the exhaust stopping it coming up. I've no keys with this but i would like to try and get it started before stripping it down . Do i need to get a new ingition or is there another way i could attempt to start it ? I will add some photos of it. Thanks

I wouldn't be overly hopeful of finding a AF S type engine in there like the horncast badge may suggest.

What ever it is - nothing that chucking at least 2 grand wouldn't fix -
Have faith - you want to see some of the shite ive had through the shop - a little love and a lot of cash will fix that for sure....

Hi me , urban scooters in Birmingham said to me when i showed them pictures that i would have to throw a lot of cash that at this and at the end there won't be much value in the scoot being Indian. It don't bother me it being a Indian scoot, my idea was to do it up for my own use, not to sell, but if the engine is from something else then that's going to put me off doing up. Doe's the rest of the scoot look genuine sil ? Thanks

Was a bit of a joke based on the S type badge that was presumably fitted as that was just laying at hand. Don't expect the engine will be anything other than an Indian 150 that's lead a hard life.

I think the guy who i bought it from has a box full of sil badges that he sticks on. You had me going Juan, thought i had got a even more crap scoot than it is already

I'd expect it to be a 150. You could get it running quite cheaply, change bearings and seals, cables etc and use it for a run around and see how it feels.

any scooter shops going to say "large wad required" , 1st off theres the lambretta mark up to accommodate, then labour charges of 40-50 a hour . do the work yaself an under a grands well do-able . so long as you dont get into fancy kits ,a electronic/12volt kit can be had for £100 ,an about same for a usable 175cc barrel . intrigued by the number plate , not indian or pakistan , arab numbers , think some of the indonesian places use that type of writing ,thats a well travelled scoot the list of were it might of been is long. could even off been a despatch/attack scoot for the taliban ,be wary of attaching any stray wires from frame to a battery , could be a "self-propelled pipe-bomb" . one advantage of its life i bet its relatively rust free ,better than my curry house special api , that had spent its life in england an needed frame repairs from rusting out .H

Cheers George S , good advice thanks. I'll be careful with the wires H ha, had good laugh with that. What i can see upto now is surface rust but don't seem to be any rust holes. My plan is to not fit any kits on ,just keep standard. Will try and do most of the work myself but where's prob best places to get parts from please ?

A close up of the engine would help but going on experience - I would say it would be the original engine - you will find you will have to bin most of the internals and replace with new - they road them hard and used whatever was at hand to repair them..... As a good mate of mine would say "its an honest bike" it is what it is and in the end everything is doable and repairable....

I did a similar thing a year or so ago, got a series 2 150 from Lambretta Finder & my take on it was that the original engine only needed to get me to the MOT station and back & then I could do the registration. I wanted to spend as little as possible on getting it running incase there were registration issues. Here's a video I took at the time of my engine, it was great fun getting it running & has now been replaced with a gran turismo 240 one, but I've kept the original engine untouched on the bench. Just replaced the seals, oil & rings & re-assembled it & it started 2nd kick. It ran quite well but was a slow as fuck, but what would you expect from a 56 year old 150cc. I love lambretta engines, I could take them apart & rebuild them all day long!

There are so many shops out there and they all give great advice and services - I'm sure you already have a favourite shop for scooter parts - best advice I can give is buy the best part you can afford. There are so many cheap and what seems unbelievable offers out there but remember the old and so very true adage - Buy cheap buy twice -
I must have had 10-15 like yours throughout the years and in the end they have all made it back on the road. At least you have a decent frame - the rest is what they call "tired"..... "very tired"

i use willenhall as he wears a turban n smells of curry , but is in this country ,a cheap lammy means budget indian parts ,at least willenhalls subject to trading standards .he gets from rellys/contacts he knows over there so dont get ripped an dont in turn rip you . go for sil genuine parts were available from a good dealer ,theres fakes around so a trusted dealers a must ,an if buying indian pull up a few listings an avoid the very cheapest with low feedback, there often 2nds or rejects from decent dealers . an facebooger lammy pages , bunch of snobs some of em who sell indian/remade stuff cheap so they can buy "genuine italian" 60 year old stuff thats knackerd, but genuine . got a decent seat last week for £40 , with catch ,coz the latch chrome surround had a tickle of rust ,5 mins with humbrol model enamel paint an it looks like a £150 seat again . for decent rubber kits i use allstyles , an ve-uk has some good stuff too .
