a new one on me.
is the backplate catching on the area near the transfers?
sounds like you may need to bash it into submission with a file

Don't think so, it just seems a wee bit too big. Will try 'persuade' it.

just had another look at ya photo's , an so long as stator sits down on the "step" nxt to mounting screw holes its fine .they are tight in the steps an need gentle levering to release to be moved/re-timed . its to help the screws retain them against the magnetic drag from fly .tighten down evenly by the screws an if washers are near flat/horizontal to lugs/stator face its sitting in right . put on ya fly an nip it up an turn engine to be sure its in right an not rubbing anywhere . Was going to say before tightening your head bolts down check your squish. I'd suggest building up paper gaskets with some sealant instead of the metal as the metal gaskets tend to leak a little after time. Your required squish will determine your head gasket thickness.
I also suspect your stator sitting slightly proud is due to wiring on the back of the stator.
Looking good though.

Cheers fellas, only just seen these replies. Been in the shed this eve and am convinced the backing plate for my new stator is too big. I can't get it to sit on the step as you call it H, so I just fitted it so it was level, put new flywheel on and once i tightened the retaining nut the flywheel wouldn't budge. Loosened it off again and it turns but seems to rub on the stator. Took flywheel off and could see where stator and flywheel had rubbed. To be clear, I assume the stator should sit where the yellow arrows are, not the red arrows? If so, when I get the stator sat flush at one side its overlapping the seat at the other side by over 1mm. In following pics, stator is sat on the yellow area to the bottom right, but is overlapping the top and left hand mounts. I can't see how I can force that into position. Is it worth going back to Beedspeed to see if they'll swap it do you think? Cheers fellas.

Looks too big to me....I'd measure the diameter and give BeedSpeed a call before sending it. I've had stators from them where the coil cores needed filing to stop them rubbing, but never the backplate too large but with the Indian stators anything is possible

yep,as nick says ,call beedys an swap it .to get it to fit you'd need to file even amounts from all sides were it touches the mounts so it stays central. a tricky proposition .H

Have confirmed with Beedies, it is too big. Whether its the wrong one or a QC issue at the manufacturers I dunno, but they're gonna swap it for me, decent chaps that they are.

That's good. They've always been very good when I've had a problem and doesn't seem to be any change since they changed hands...just the Indian manufacturers are the problem

Yeah top marks to Beedies, I sent the stator back yesterday, got a refund of my postage cost today and a text saying replacement will be delivered tomorrow. If all goes to plan I might even be able to try to start it tomorrow.

Bit of a setback, I missed the delivery of the stator, it came in the only 30 minutes I've been out of the house all day.
Just managed to install a new speedo cable though, and with a bit of heat I got the front axle out, removed the old bearing off it and got the new one onto the axle. Spent a good while trying the screwdriver method to get the hub retaining ring off with no joy. Will have to see if theres an ironmongers nearby with a suitable sized bit of steel.
If I can get my 9yo lad interested in trying to help I might get chance to put the stator on tomorrow.

We have mentioned the hub retaining ring's reverse thread, I got my flat metal bar off eBay few years ago now but it was only a couple of quid at the time.

yep,as vinrouge reminds you its a "lefty" thread .an not usually that tight ,unless somebod's forgotten an tried to undo wrong way . an its always the way with parcels ,i once suspected the hermes guy waited round the corner til i went out before trying to deliver .it was uncanny how i missed it 2 times in 2 days . Yeah you've told me it's a lefty thread on a different thread in the tech forum. Just so I get this right, that means looking from the brake side it rotates clockwise to loosen yeah? Am sure I'll sort it this weekend, off to pick the stator up from Halfords now (Got DPS to deliver there)
