All I know is they were massively expensive new, parts are really hard to come by and I wouldn't touch any version with a Barge pole or any long stick. But hope you can get it sorted. So you don't want to buy it then

Let's just say should I get one in my next Xmas stocking I'd get a 'plane to Greenland and smack Fat Nick square in the gob. They say if you wait long enough ' some mug will buy it '. I was that mug I've tried talking the Mrs into having it as a ' feature ' in the living room but she's having none of it

You're getting there Kev and I think you are heading in the right direction now, try new belt first, it could be slipping and hence reducing top speed, if that doesn't fix it then I reckon you are looking down the variator route. That's about as far as my knowledge of how auto transmissions work though.

That's about as far as my knowledge of how auto transmissions work though. New belt and I put fresh automatic transmission oil in, so the next step will be the variator and rollers , I think rollers are available ,but I'm not too sure on the variator itself ,it's my own fault for buying it in the first place

Gutted for you Kev.
You would certainly be better off parts and info-wise with a geared PK. But the work you have put in would be a shame.
Good luck mate.

Thanks Shaun , if I still have no joy once I've replaced the variator I'll be calling it a day with this one and I'll be on the look out for another pk. I've done a bit tonight and you can see the wear on the variator which was on the ' new engine '. The original engine's variator looks good so I'm going to swap them over , only problem is one is fitted by dowels and one is riveted on , I'll need to carry out modifications to the variator and I'll only get the one chance to get it right .

I'm not sure if it'll be a direct replacement, never had one myself, as you've no doubt gathered, but I know there was differences between the displacements and as they developed things. May just be the angle of the photo but the one on the left looks thicker to me for a start apart from the obvious locating style.

May just be the angle of the photo but the one on the left looks thicker to me for a start apart from the obvious locating style. Ive checked the dimensions and although it's not a direct fit because of the dowels ,it is identical ,it looks thicker because the dowels protruded about 2mm which makes it look thicker as its sitting higher . Both variators use the same size rollers as I checked while going through the pair side by side to see if I could see any differences . The only difference is the dowels ,reason being it makes changing the variator easy as it just locates using the dowels , the riveted on variator was a ballache to get off as I had to carefully drill the rivets out . As it is now I've nothing too loose ,if it goes tits up or I see no gain in top speed ,I'll be offering it up for sale ( spares or repairs ) I owe it to myself and the good people of this forum to give it one more go

Ok a busy evening , PCD and spacing worked out , onto my little milling machine to drill holes . Next step make the Dowls. Afterwards I pressed the dowls into the variator. Notice where I previously drilled out the rivets , I needed the dowls to fit in between these. Now the other variator fits and it's all back together for a test tommorow . Wish me luck !

I've been out on a test run and I've gained 5km which is 3mph , it's still not where it should be but I've gained a little , next thing to do is order some new rollers for the variator , if that doesn't improve things and I don't hit my target of 34 mph ,which is what it's top speed should be ,that will be game over

Looking at the wear on the variator I think new rollers would definitely help. Stick with it Kev, although it's hard for you I ma learning along with you as we all are so great that you are persevering.

i know its been driving ya crazy kev ,but reckon youve cracked it just about. the gain with different variator should be gained again with new rollers ,might be worth investigating if theres different roller weights .like for later auto's ,wont gain ya extra mph but if memory serves lighter rollers =crisper take-up/acceleration . i know you dream of the heady heights of 34mph ,but some ponys (bhp) are goin to have escaped the corral by now from a older engine .reckon 30's attainable tho . give ya a shopper/runaround til ya can save up an get a geared pk to tune up for ya high-days n holidays +pillions scoot .thats how i get it past my management ,horses for courses sort of thing .an its against the "law" to have only one ,they get lonely an its seen as "scooter-domestic-abuse" .H

Cheers lads , I can't find the right size rollers but I can get some that I can modify , most of them on the market are a couple of MM too long but the right outside diameter, so they just need to be shortened .
H , from doing a bit of homework the lighter rollers give quicker acceleration and the heavier rollers help it hold the lower gears meaning it will perform better going up hill , I'd want a happy medium , I can weigh my existing rollers and calculate what weight I'd need to buy .

Just looking back at my old project , I sold it later in 2016 and bought a Lambretta , 6 scooter rallies and 6 breakdowns , only one of those breakdowns resulted in me having to be recovered home . I think Ive done the Lambretta thing now and would be happy to get another pk / small frame, but a geared one

Yeah I have seen various posts on Facebook and there are some really good results with the kits , food for thought I suppose
