Hang on...just rerread your post Gareth. Shimming the tree and kick shaft to avoid interfering with the primary....hmmm...not sure I understand that...?

so got in touch with Gareth to understand exactly I needed to check - opened the engine up again, removed the tree and crank and lapped them both properly on the clutch and flywheel respectively (obvious really that you can't do this when they are in the motor and free to turn...) then checked the clearance on the clutch spider and the primary basket with the nut tightened up (using a clever tool i bought off Tony a while back)- all good with the Newfren spider - seems to be well shaped to avoid issues...so just got to put it all back together again...

I'm reading from afar in Bali at moment. It could be the light but have you checked you've got clearance between bottom of clutch bell and the thin plate covering the clutch cush springs. pk clutches are wider at the bell than single spring ones and can rub if youre not using a rebuild kit or drt type primaries? I could be wrong here but just being careful.

Dave is correct and by looking at this picture, you can see marks where the spider has been rubbing on the primary.

Thanks max and Dave I stripped it down and sprayed a little bit of primer on the newfren spider and fitted it back on the tree. Torqued it up, spun it and no sign of rubbing. Paint looks untouched so think it's ok without shimming

Cheers Steve
It all gets squeezed in between family life and work...no garage so the engine gets built in the corner of the kitchen and tucked away when it's not being worked on. I must have split the cases four or five times on this build and I've finally got the hang of aligning gears etc to get the cases to slide back together nicely. I've never done an engine with a normal bearing on the fly side but I bought a tool to push the crank out and that's made it very easy.....got a bit of space tomorrow so hoping to finish the build and get it ready for firing up next weekend...

Hey Nick.. What's the clever tool you mentioned and used to check the spider-primary basket clearance?

I got it from Tony O Brien when he used to be on here a lot. He had a batch made. Very neat for locking the clutch and with the right bits you can fit the basket and then build the clutch in the engine...

last spend on this motor ( I hope) treated myself to a new clutch SIP cover with the XL2 geared actuator... vespatronic fitted - rough guess at position based on previous but will strobe it once its running flywheel fitted and torqued up Just about ready to stick the carb on and see if it fires. Anybody got any pointers for jetting on a new 28mm Polini carb?

it lives....a couple of kicks and away it goes...vid below now to sort timing out properly and try and set the idle nicely before getting it back in the scoot The finished engine...cowling doesn't fit over the M1 head very well - not sure if that's the pattern cowl or the head...might have to pinch a cowl off another motor to check..

Looking good, they always look good in engine frames, all they need is a glass top and a place in the man cave just in front of the 60" drug dealers tv.

Thanks Gareth and thanks for the nice cases and parts that started it all off. Just need to shim the rear hub out a tad as I had to put a 1mm packer in the clutch cover to clear the clutch. Where to get a shim?

Nice one Nick!
LTH do spacers of various thickness for the rear wheel, I think you'll find them under gaskets.
As for the cylinder cowl, it should fit without any problems. Remove the bolt at the back and just fix it at the front and that should do it.
