Got a 27/69 set with an XL2 clutch (but not cover) which I got from bikegrim when I bought the cases and a few other bits that set me off.
Since then I got the M1 kit and a Franz exhaust. Just shelled out for a vespatronic (which I was hoping to avoid) and a new Polini 'PWK' style carb.
Need to add it all up but I know it's more than I thought when I started...

Oh and I opened it up again as wasn't happy with the friction on the crank. Turned out I'd not driven the drive side seal fully home and it was dragging on the face of the crank. Much better now.

Progress slowed due to work being nuts but made a bit of progress with spraying the Franz even my wife think that looks nice... barrel/head all fitted and torqued down to 13Nm - squish tweaked to between 1.0-1.1mm. Loctite 510 to seal (bit less needed than I squeezed on) just waiting for a new clutch circlip and then will finish it all off and get carb on...

quick question - i am fitting an XL2 clutch on a DRT shaft and the tab on the tab washer just gets flattened when I tighten up the clutch nut. I am inclined to ditch the tab washer and get the extra thread turns on the nut?

i always use thread locker aswell as tab , am guessing you could just use locker ,so long as its a permanent good quality one .just the potential for catastrophic damage if clutch does comes loose would worry me . H

I am inclined to ditch the tab washer and get the extra thread turns on the nut? Have you lapped the tree and spider together with valve paste? If not, it's a good idea to get a perfect mating surface.. I gained the better part of a thread to screwy nut further on to the tree.. And green loctite 620 and torqued the beans out of it.. Hasn't slipped yet. Knock wood.

Nice work so far What have you sprayed the exhaust with? Wanted to use high temp lacquer on mine to keep the bare metal look, but ive heard bad comments on it. The finish on yours looks top quality though!

The finish on yours looks top quality though! I used a german high temp clear lacquer made by MOTIP, cleaned and degreased before spraying and just sprayed three or four coats on - no doubt it will wear through around the wheel but I have got good life out of similar products in black before. Will just have to see how it goes...

Looking good. I also like watching builds. Be careful with the amount of lapping paste if you're doing it in the engine. I use a drt on pk clutch with no tab and locite with no problems, I use washer which came with tree.

been thinking about this a bit more. I have about 1.5mm lateral play between the basket and the clutch and tree when they are tightened up (without doing any lapping). I have a new clutch spider and a new DRT tree. Seems to me I need to split the cases and lap the tree into the basket properly and see if some of that tolerance comes out. Feels like too much lateral movement, although once the clutch cover is on it will disappear I guess....

Remember the idea of shimming of the tree (and kick start shaft ) to accommodate the spider on the xl2 so it doesn't interfere with the primary. Was there something wrong with the piaggio spider?

Only after I cross threaded my puller onto it after I realised I'd fitted the clutch without a woodruff key....duuuh!
I will pack/shim the clutch cover out but was just wondering if the lateral play was normal when the clutch is tightened onto the tree. I suspect it is as the end of the tree has float between the bearing on the fly side case and the bush in the clutch basket
