Hi,
I have purchased a MMW rear disc brake for my 1969 Vespa from SIP, however despite getting an installation guide from MMW the disc calliper fouls the wheel rim, I thought perhaps the wheel rims I had were at fault so I purchased tubeless rims from SIP, still the same problem. All the wheel rims I have measured are 35m/m on the inside edge of rim (Engine side) SIP suggested I try a different rim also they do not have the rear disc brake in stock so cannot at this stage this look at the problem. However this saga has been ongoing now for 6 weeks, does anybody else have this problem, some information reveals using SS wheel rims, however not sure if they were a different size, the fact remains that SIP have sold a product that does not fit as far as I can see a standard wheel rim. Would appreciate any feedback to resolve this issue before I go to print with all the relevant emails &photographs of this problem.
Cheers pearcey46

GS 160 / SS 180 rims have a different offset but whether that will cure it for you I couldn't say. My mate had one of these rear brakes a few years back and I can't remember him saying he had clearance issues when he fitted it.

Hi Juan,
That is an interesting comment in respect to rim sizes being different, I will check with local supplier to find out depth of GS/SS rim, its quite possible that MMW/SIP have used this type of rim for initial set-up not possibly being aware of different rim sizes, if it as a difference of about 4m/m then that would account for my problem, however in saying that MMW/SIP should have checked all types of rims for the various Vespa models.

I'd agree that it should be fit for purpose using a standard offset rim and if not then a note of this should've been included. However, as I said, I can't remember my mate having any issues so I can only imagine that it's my shite memory, more than possible, or they've changed the design or parts which again isn't beyond the bounds of probability.

Just waiting for confirmation on the actual offset for the GS160/SS180 rim is actually 32m/m from the standard 35m/m offset on all the other Vespa models this additional 3m/m is the amount that the wheel rim fouls the disc calliper.

Confirmation from a GS160 owner that the rims are offset by 32m/m if Harald is reading this, I have heard that you are the Guru in respect to resolving this problem, because the 3 m/m is the clearance I require for calliper clearance, either SIP supply new rims that are suitable (ie 32m/m offset) or come up with a solution that is acceptable to me

Have been informed by SIP that rear disc brake will be in stock next week, & will try to sort out problem, however looking on other forums it appears that this problem has been around for a couple of years, the solution from one site was as suspected use GS160 or SS180 rims, that would be fine if available, these bike went out of production over 40 years ago, plus I have fitted SIP aluminium tubeless rims.

I'm fairly sure you can still get copy GS / SS rims although how good they are I couldn't say.

SIP have finally admitted that information in respect to wheel rim requirements was not highlighted when purchasing a MMW rear disc break for vintage Vespa. The standard (Tubeless & split rims)35m/m offset wheel rim will not fit rear disc set-up, this admission was only after 23 emails, I have since been offered one only split rim with 32m/m offset at no cost, which I have rejected because if I get a puncture in the rear wheel the spare will not fit. I have written direct to Sales Director suggesting that they manufacture there SIP tubeless rims to 32m/m offset & provide detailed requirements when this disc brake is purchased, this will then allow rear disc brake to be used on all vintage Vespa models without the problems I have encountered, I am waiting for reply from SIP re my suggestion & replacement of my 3 Off aluminium SIP tubeless rims.

SIP have offered a full refund on rear disc brake & rims, they will not manufacture a tubeless rim with a 32m/m offset to suit rear disc brake, I did suggest that they produce all rims with a 32m/m offset but this was rejected on a cost/demand basis so if you wish to fit a rear disc brake to a vintage Vespa (Except SS180/GS160) you will require new split rims, to me a retrograde step as the SIP aluminium tubeless rims are great, never lose air & look great. However I am working on a design modification kit (Don't trow away your split rims just yet you may need one side for spacing)that can be fitted locally to overcome problem with the 35m/m offset, will keep you informed on progress. At present I will keep tubeless rims, as SIP have refunded me 25 euros on the 3 rims that I purchased, I may sell the rear disc brake to a friend who is rebuilding a SS180, but will hold off until I try my idea out.

Managed to fit rear disc brake using standard SIP aluminium tubeless rims, moved disc ring in with spacer by 2m/m, calliper support bracket by 2m/m & re-worked hub by removing existing studs & used stainless steel bolts X 37m/m long in existing stud holes (Used Loctite 263) then manufactured 3m/m spacers to fit on existing stud tabs, used metal glue to secure in place, tried metal spacers cut from split rims worked OK but preferred the aluminium spacers. All spacers made from aluminium, with the disc extension ring, made formulae by using a timber cut-out from 10m/m plywood then used heat to make circle same circumference as extension ring, drilled clearance holes after, note some filing required to reduce aluminium to exact size of extension ring otherwise it will foul brake calliper Also need to remove more casting from engine & clutch cover but this is minimal.
