Hello forum, I just purchased this after a long search for an origional painted series 1. What can I use on the rusty bits to stop it going more rusty but not rub the rust down etc, VW men use something dont they on the bugs etc but I dont know what it is :-)

There's a huge topic on the GSF about preserving original paint. General opinion is that Owatrol (which you can get in the UK) works well but sometimes causes a brownish film over the paint. Oxiblock is another brand that is used regularly, but that doesn't seem to be available in the UK.

This is the stuff the VW crowd favour. Ankor waxI'm not saying the stuff Mathias has mentioned is any better nor worse so look at your options. I'm fairly sure that Halfrauds do a similar product but I'm buggered if I can remember what it's called. Well done anyway, I really like those early Li's.

I think it's fairly safe to say that the sales blurb probably over-sells things but then they all do. My daughter's mates ex-boyfriend is into rat VW's, although Polo's etc. with him rather than earlier air-cooled stuff, so I'll bend his ear next time I see him. He's currently running a Caddy van in a "fire damaged" look. It's quite cool in that way the early 20's age group like. Slammed to the floor, huge alloys with tiny sidewalled tyres and a massive exhaust pipe.

Looks ideal to keep as is and give the body the ankor wax treatment. Never tried it myself but I've thought about it a couple of time, you'll have to let us know how you get on

Couple of pics now its home, really pleased with it, someone has paid attention to all the aluminium pieces as they have all been polished and not recently, even the steering lock flap is intact and polished, no keys though for that nor the toolbox door so Ill need to see if I can get those, there is a number on the toolbox lock but didnt see one earlier on the steering lock. No exhaust on it only a U bend, not too bothered by that as it was probably knackered anyway Drain and level plugs are missing so Im presuming its been kept indoors where its been stored to release the lubricants?? Just need to spend some time recommissioning it to make it roadworthy but wont be doing that soon, just glad I found one so origional :-)

Oh yeh whats your thoughts on polishing and waxing the paintwork? The red is obviously faded but it all looks like it would come up nice with some polish but dont want to lose the look it has, any advice?

Looks really good that. I'd fancy doing one with a GT 186 but that seems too nice to molest so just enjoy the old school charm. Paintwise maybe give the red a light T-cut to bring it back to life and then preserve it with a top coat of the Ankor Wax.
