Hi there, I'm new here, found the site through VCB and thought I'd introduce myself as you all seem a friendly bunch of people. I've been looking for a Vespa for a few months and last week became the proud owner of a 1974 50 Special. I got it for a very reasonable price but as you can it needs a little bit of work. After getting the her started (new spark plug) I've now began to strip everything for a re-spray. I'm new to the 2 wheeled type of transport so I'm sure I'll have lots of stupid questions when it comes to putting her back together. As for the name 'daytona' this is my other classic mode of transport... A daytona yellow 1972 Escort Mexico. Cheers, Alan

Welcome to the world of smallframes mate. ;D Nice scoot, I remember seeing her on ebay. Is the engine standard? What are your plans. Looking forward to see progress pictures.

Thanks for the weclome.
She's totally standard from what I can see, was imported in from Italy in 2002 and lightly restored but been off the road for a couple years. I'm going down the standard route, I just need a scooter for nipping around town so the 50 should be fine for the time being.
The Frame is in really good condition and just needs a few dings taking out. I'm going for a white/cream colour, not sure of the exact shade yet.

Hi mate, standard 50 does about 30mph with the wind in your favor , so nipping down the road its not exactly the right word. I would say slugging is more likely. ;D

Hello there Daytona, Good to have you onboard. ;D. I'm putting a 50 spesh engine in my Vespa 90, gonna be converting it to a 125cc. Looking at the year of your scoot I think it's a three speed, which is the same as my engine. There is a bit of work involved in upping the cc as you may have to use gear up kits etc but it is achieveable if you want a bit more performance. I'm constantly asking silly questions as this is my first scoot so don't worry . The guys on the forum are really helpful so ask away ;D. Good Luck, Lisa

Welcome fella and good luck with the Spec. That Mex is bloody lovely, I've got a real soft spot for 70's performance Fords.

Thanks Guys and Gals,
Yep 3 gears, the plan is to get it repainted and put back together so I can start using it as soon as possible. As this is my first scooter I plan to stick with the 50 until I've got a bit more experience. Then maybe an upgrade as I work towards a full license.
I'll get some pics up soon.

Update time... Stage one of the resto nearly complete. Frame stripped, painted and put back together. I've tried to keep the original parts where possible but there were a few things like the floor rails, horn cover & rearlight that have been replaced with repro parts from SIP and Beedspeed. Just the legshield chrome & number plate to sort before I get her ready for an MOT. Well please with the progress so far, especially as I'm a scooter novice.

Looks great, well done. Personally I'd have kept the contrast of the grey horncast but that's just me.

Thanks for the coments. I did toy with the idea of keeping the horncast silver/grey but wanted something a little different.

Not sure yet. I'm on a uber tight budget but would prefer the ally but it's the extra cost of the tool. Then again I haven't seen the aftermarket chrome close up to gauge the quality and fit
