Don't know if I am able to keep a promise like that

Right...Boaty has been dropped off at Frank Sanderson's for conversion to auto. A Typhoon engine has been sourced and is due to be rebuilt with a Malossi top end by Team Woodspeed on here. Most likely Lambretta forks will be used due to the fact that I have some complete with outboard disc and I have another S57 fork stem that will be grafted onto the Lambretta fork. The ride height will be higher than standard for handling improvement and to account for a mahoosive expansion chamber on the RHS. Hopefully though not too high which is a fine balance sometimes executed badly on other conversions in my opinion so fingers crossed. It will be running 10inch wheels.

This hit the buffers last week due to the amount of work required to widen the rear seat loop to accommodate the auto engine side casing. So I'm now back to looking at the 2 stroke bike engine method and considering similar to what Tom originally had planned using a DT or TZR 125 motor or similar. Any views on this or leads to available engines, suggestions etc etc I'm all ears..

I've got some bits lying around from a bike engined project that never got off the ground. I bought a 2007 gasgas 250 enduro engine about 7 years ago and then a year later happened to stumble across a road registered GasGas engineless rolling frame for peanuts so it ended up in that instead of it's intended home which was a GP150.
A bloke near me though used to build RD350 rossa type lambrettas and when I was on with the project he advised me to buy an RD350 swingarm (steel box section and constant profile along it's length so easier to shorten and weld damper mounts onto for twin shock rear end without having to have ally welding facilities). Will still have it somewhere (uncut) with the pivot and axle bolts and chain tensioners. He also sold me some adaptors he had made for his conversions to mount a double disc, or disc and a sprocket onto a 10" piaggio twist-and-go rim. I still have two adaptors and wheels which would do both ends. The rest of the bits went to a guy who built a gt250 engined series 1.
In terms of engines, the GasGas uses a vacuum operated powervalve so no fancy wiring or servo motors to worry about. Also unlike most of the jap stuff the engines are virtually unchanged across the years so parts shouldn't be a problem. Being an enduro engine gearing is a bit more suitable for the road too and power delivery less aggressive than a motorcross bike.
DT & TZR motors will probably be a bit tame. Aprilia RS125 rotax engines are plentiful and reasonable. Rich Taylor of Lambretta Gran Turismo fame makes an RS125 based ignition system and also custom looms to order which can cater for powervalve etc. I've got one of his ignitions and he made a loom for for my GP from scratch with front and rear power outputs, rear mounted battery, support for the RS125 dash etc all built in. That might save you a big job.

Cheers for the input The Aprilia option has already been ruled out due to RHS drive sprocket as has any 4 stroke (especially a twin) due to lack of room for the head. It needs to be about RS125 sized engine but with a LHS drive sprocket. The TZR125 are around 20 or so BHp which will be more than enough I'm sure. I'll keep on looking out for one.

Why can't you run a rhs sprocket out of interest?

Robd, I'm using the existing swing arm and sprocket carrier and it's al geared up for LHS

Not sure I'd want to put any amount of power through that cast ally original single sided swingarm. Wouldn't it be easier in the long run to fab up a new 2 sided swingarm? You can increase the wheelbase a bit then if you like and removes the limitations on engine choice. You'd never see it under all that panelwork either. Most engines you'll be looking at, form part of the swingarm pivot and so it'll stiffen the back end up no end if you can pick up on those.

You'd be surprised how over engineered that back end is. H it needs to be electric start as well

Gonna show my mechanical ignorance here but would it be possible to flip the swing arm over so you can mount the other side?

Yes you can flip it but it means more work and I am looking for a solution that is within reason when you start to tot up the man hours it becomes less attractive.
H, I don't think the rotax is for me to be honest but just to check I have just watched Oz on you tube to make sure.

it is a bit mental ,an seen in the flesh a real nice bit of work . but does overpower the handling an brakes of a smallie ,so god knows what it would do to boaty .ive toyed with the idea of one in my ld frame but think i'd want to de-tune a bit for health n safety reasons an my own sanity limit .are you stuck on a 2 stroke ,as theres many more lectric start small 4 strokers about .H

Not enough room for the cylinderhead/ cam cover in there on a four stroke unless you can name one that's about the size of a Aprilia RS125

New Year, new owner. Yes I have moved the project on. If they wish to update the thread it up to them.
