This arrived today from Mathias. Looks too nice to fit! Wish I'd remembered to get a gasket... I'll post some pics during / after installation. What's everyone using to protect the metal? Some kind of clear varnish would be nice, if anybody can recommend one.

Very nice. I've had good success with what is sold around here as barbecue paint for sealing those things up. A light scuff & a couple light coats makes the rust stay away for quite a while.

Sounds good. What colour is it?
I'd rather not do it in black if I can help it...

Got two of them today. ;D Really nice. Its a shame using bbq paint so, I've been thinking clear powdercoating (if exists)?

powdercoating would melt/burn very quickly. best recipe for protecting the look of the pipe is: clean it thoroughly with IPA Alcohol to remove all traces of grease. spray with VHT Clear aerosol paint, in three or four light coats, 5 minutes apart. this avoids dribblers/runs this next bit is important.. set up the pipe so you have a heat gun blowing through it in the same direction as the exhaust would when in operation. leave the heat gun running like this for at least an hour, preferably two. Or if you know a friendly powder coaters, ask them to cook it in their walk in oven. the reason for this is that the paint has to cure. it is not a good idea to try to cure the paint when the exhaust is fitted to the bike. As the dry paint starts to cure, it actually goes quite sticky again with heat. Then bits of crap from the road tend to stick to it. After an hour or two of heat, it stops being sticky and sets hard. Wish I followed my own advice the first time on my pipe

Thanks for the link nicsar. Tom, that sounds like to much work to me. Found out that powdercoating is not good on the net. Might look into ceramic coating....

OK, I've got a heat gun and some VHT clear lacquer. The plan is to: 1) degrease 2) take the glaze off with scotchbrite 3) degrease again with white spirit 4) paint with several light coats to build up coating 5) set up with heat gun blowing through to bake for a couple of hours Back to Heathrow, tomorrow...

andy - if you scotch the pipe you will loose all that lovely welding colouration.
As long as you do a VERY good job of degreasing (def use isopropyl alcohol) before you start spraying, you shouldn't need to key the surface with a scotch pad.
Having said that, because I ballsed my own pipe up (by curing on the scoot) and had to recoat it, I gave mine a nice brushed finish with a rotarty scotch pad and the vht lacquer is staying put extremely well.
good luck
