You clutch also has a spring. There's nothing wrong with the old centre spring setup up to a certain power. A Malossi clutch needs slight shortening of the spring to fully disengage, but with that done it's quite good enough for 20 BHP. No need to go five plate, that just asking for trouble in my opinion.

very true but i was wondering how much more friction would 1 extra plate add on... 4hp 5hp ?
should the plates only hold at certain torques and not be out to do with hp?

No idea really, and yes, it's torquelimit, not a powerlimit.

I didn't use the XL2 push plate with the bearing at the end as with the primmy clutch cover the plunger was pushing constantly on the plate thus, making the clutch slip (I will try to source an XL2 clutch cover soon). Hope you like it. ;D Have you fitted an Xl2 cover yet? I got exactly the same clutch, only with the XL2 cover and it's slipping like a bastard... I had to shim the cover 1mm but that doesn't seem to cut it... i'm just interested to see if you had the same issue....

The clutch was permanently engaged, couldn't even kickstart the engine. Back to primmy push plate and cover.

The clutch was permanently engaged, couldn't even kickstart the engine. Back to primmy push plate and cover. had a look at this today. A 2-3mm spacer is needed, and that means the backplate has to be shimmed out as well. I tried a primmy cover but didn't like the feel of it, so i'm going to try to make some thick gaskets this weekend. do i need to shim the inner ring of the rear wheel bearing, or just the outer...?

Just the outer. Cover is about 2.5mm thick in the place where it counts. I have welded some of them and made room for the taller clutch basket on a mill. That worked alright, but requires a bit of equipment.
