well finally got a kickstart fitted as some may of read about davedaniel.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=4369&page=1couldn't resist the tempation to see what happens if I depressed the kickstart - well something made a grating/grinding sound and now the kickstart wont return. Oh well looks like this project will have to wait a while until I move house and get my new garage built at which point I can drop the engine and strip it properly

Sounds like the return spring has dislodged. Fairly common problem.

Sounds like the return spring has dislodged. Fairly common problem. Is that easy to fix? possible cause for it happening? Its got a little bit of 'bounce' but only in its bottomed out state

Easy fix but it means splitting the motor. The springs can get tired though so it could be worth getting a new one for the rebuild.

In fact it's sat untouched for the last five years but now recently single and having moved house again I now have loads of free time (but little money) so this project is back on the agenda.

Made some progress with it: In its new home: Dropped the engine: Cleaning some of the dust off Cleaned some of the dirt off the frame also using white spirit and the paintwork isn't completely gone. There are some rusty bits and lots of scratches and it appears to have been over sprayed in parts but half of me is saying to keep it and spend what little cash I have on the engine. You can get some sort of spray to stop it rusting any further I think? This might of course affect my plans for using the primmy headset unless I really throw any concerns about looks out the window, as I'm pretty sure its in a different colour.

I wouldn't mind the looks as long as its a runner. Better to have a working patchwork than a shiny paperweight.

Started taking the engine apart this afternoon. I'll post some pictures in a day or so when I get access to a proper computer but in the meantime I've realised that I'm gonna need some specialist tools as all mine are for lambrettas I've been searching the forum and have found the advice to buy a clutch compressor and puller in one but have not been able to work out if small frames use a different flywheel holder to lardies. Is this one ok? beedspeed.com/tool-flywheel-holding-tool-vespa-p-235.html

the only "special tools" you need are the clutch puller and flywheel holder you can use a nut and bolt for the clutch compressor and all the rest are standard spanners, screwdrivers and rubber/nylon mallet. a flywheel holder is handy for reassembly but you can manage without like this, or this vespa clutch compressor fleabay again

Thanks. Not so much needed then, but the flywheel holder I linked to is the correct one and will fit?

Barrel - lipped a little, rebore needed? Cylinder head piston - not so bad it seems Brakes - ok Clutch Case - is this broken? layshaft Cog - hand loose! Clutch - again not exactly much care taken with locking washer! Also is there any test I can do on the bearings before I go any further?

Removed the clutch driven plates look a bit rusty but not sure that warrents replacement or not. I'd welcome anyone elses thoughts on that How do I remove the clutch basket? Also still wondering if there are any tests that can be run on the bearings?

There is a circlip on the back of the clutch basket, only accessible after splitting the cases.
I reckon those steel clutch plates are ok, but have a look how much they cost to replace, if it's not much you may as well.

Rusty clutch plates will ware the corks pretty rapidly (clutch plates are quite cheap) bearing play is just a case of cleaning the bearings and feeling if they run smoothly without excessive play but a full set of bearings and oilseals is not a great deal of cash if you only want to change the least amount of bearings do the four big ones they are also the easiest to get out of the case

I leave all the stuff in the picture in place until after the casing is split? How surprising Vespa engines are when you are used to lammys

Just looking to split the casing apart. Do I loosen all the 7 or so nuts on the fly wheel side. I've been watching the home workshop dvd thingy but its based on a lardy engine and it seems they only have 3 nuts near the flywheel.
