It amazes me how people can let any machine get in to such a messy state, The cleaning will make all the work much more pleasant

The fan cover got some repairs and some of the worst dings banged out with a hammer. Re-made one of the missing ribs and the thingy above the center hole. Not perfect but still better than the cheap repro crap. This is where the magic happens. Gosh I'm grateful to have a chance to use this sweet, sweet thing. In go the crusty parts to the welcoming company of glass beads and aluminum oxide Literally five minutes later, out comes the part clean as a whistle Then it's just matter of adding a lick of paint to have a decent looking part to install again.

Tried to spice things up by throwing on the LTH exhaust. Looks and sounds nice but the just does not run right full throttle. Tried many different size jets from 80-140 but no dice. Either sputters rich or sneezes weirdly when revved up. Refuses to rev up without load and just sounds bad. I'm really beginning to doubt there is something fishy going on with the cases. Otherwise I'd be suspecting the carb but I remember having tried the engine with know good Mikuni VM20 and it did not make a difference. Also ran with two different CDI ignitions, no difference.
I think it's time to ditch these cases with welded-on polini reed assembly and go with rotary for a change. It's weird that the Polini snail exhaust was this much forgiving while the responses to jetting are completely irrational with LTH. I felt some irregularities with the snail too but they were very subtle.

Im surprised that the welded on block is such a bad boy as similar has been done by many others, Im still on a rotary inlet but that is due to cost more than anything else

One thing to consider. The VM20 was from a Suzuki DS80 making ~7hp so it might have quite restricted needle valve. Should the stock needle valve of PHBL24 flow enough fuel for this kind of an engine without a pump force-feeding it?
This would actually explain the irrational responses to jetting changes quite well.

I had a fantastic time pouring thru your in-depth restore job ~ thanks so much for sharing the journey! So cheerful to see the potential in that rust-bucket and is very inspiring <3
